Kaspersky is a great antivirus but it slowed down my PC big time and I have a pretty fast computer...I do not let it run in the back ground anymore. I leave everything off and use it to scan my PC once in a while and turn it back off.

I don't use any anti-virus software, and I haven't for years.

incorrect.

I use Firefox with noscript. Every now and then I will run hijackthis, maybe every 6 months or so. I dont download much, and I don't let XP run a bunch of shit in the background.

fairly similar habits, except I formerly ran AVG, and now run Avast, with periodic visits to trend micro's housecall, and every few months a run of malwarebytes

Avast is a free download and I have had it for a year, doesn't use a lot of memory and works pretty good.

never renew Norton.

Try AVG for free or Avast for free

What they said. I have had Avast running on many computers and many customer's computers for years now with similar results to any anti-virus software (they all don't do crap).

I ran for a while with no antivirus, but I now hate computers and don't like to work on removing viruses. Plus I go to some shady sites now and then.

I like AVG Free when I need a free solution, or my wife works (and is a student) at WMU so I use their Symantec Endpoint on the home PC.

Symantec is less of a resource hog than the newest version of AVG, but both are good. Whatever you do don't use or pay for Norton 360 or the like. It will suck your PC dry.

Avg has worked great for me for years. I have heard good things about Avast and Nod32 as well.

Norton and McAfee work great.... They slow down your computer enough that you won’t want to use it, and thus won’t get any viruses.

I got a virus on a work pc with AVG, so I upgraded, kaspersky is a bit of a hog though, but so far so good.

I loaded Avira on some windows computers here. Personally I don't run any AV on my desktop.

My guess would be the end-user. If you replace that, the problem usually goes away.

Run malwarebytes to clean it up, then put Avira on for free. I've been running that way for a year without major issues.
