Default hornet/wasp question?

I just had a wasp/hornet? fly in to my house. I hit it with the kids gold glub and it went down but still alive.

I have it in a box and gave it a spray of wasp killer

My question is this think is about 1 1/2" long by about 1/2" wide (body) wing span was about 3 inch's

Black body with a few yellow spots.

Any idea?

I will post a pick in a min

bald face hornet

check all the trees and also for holes in the ground, under eves also.

if you find the nest wait till dusk then spray it with raid wasp and hornet killer!

wait till the next day and spray it again!

i had 2 nests in trees and one in the ground last year. biggest one in a tree was the size of a small water melon. when i cut it out of the tree it broke when it hit the ground and was steaming! thousands of the suckers, all dead!

Wasps and hornets are about the only two things that make me run like a little bitch.

i got stung by some hornets when i was getting my camper out of the tall grass on friday. they were little buggers but they chased me probably 500 yards on my dads tractor which is a fast as hell tractor i might add. the first one got me in the ankle and left a circle about 1/4 inch in diameter and 1/16 deep crater in my leg. right now it is red and swollen up almost the size of a dollar bill. one also got me in the hand and swolled the whole thing up. my hand is finally getting better. i have really big knuckles and it was swollen so bad i couldnt even see them. i have never had a reaction to bees or anything. it kinda freaked me out. when i get home tomorrow i might go to the doc to have him look at my leg. where it is red it is hard as a rock and the crater is solid white.

Even people who aren't allergic to bees can aquire the allergy. You should definetly have it looked at, the next time you get stung could send you into a really bad allergic reaction.

If you have a master gardener or anything in your area...Usually the MSU Extension or a 4H office will house a master gardener, you can take that into them and they can identify it for you.

That thing is creepy and way to big for my piece of mind...eep

First time I saw them my kids and I were riding our dirt bikes in this field and I saw a swarm of these things. I freaked out thinking my kids who were 7 & 5 yrs. old at the time were going to get stung to death, but the bees left us completely alone. I told the kids to head home and I inspected the area where the bees were flying around and found there burrows. I was right at the opening of the burrows and they didn't do a thing to me. Still I killed some with some wasp spray and took them to the nature center we have around here. They said "what you got there is known as a Cicada Killer, harmless to humans though they look very scary". No kidding. I couldn't believe the size of these things glad they don't sting humans cause that stinger is like 1/2" long. I was just mowing yesterday and had some flying around in my back 2 acres while I was mowing but they left me completely alone again.

That is definately a cicada killer wasp, not a bald face hornet as stated earlier.
