ok. i've got a flea infestation going on in my house somehow. I went into my michigan basement the other day and had like 10 jump on my legs. didn't think much of it since i hardley go in there. but now they have moved onto my main floor and it's crazy. anyone know of a good spray or home brew flea killer? i only have one cat and she's just a kitten with nothing on her.

Borax laundry powder. Sprinkle it on your floors and vac up after a little while.. I would probably bomb the basement...

Sounds like you need to get rid of them in both places, not just the upstairs.

I'd recommend sucking it up and getting a professional to do it. That way, you have a warranty if the first attempt doesn't take care of them.

X2 on the borax detergent.
sprinkle it on any carpet, cloth etc, brush it in, let it sit for 5 minutes and then vacuum it up.

You can leave dishes of salt out, that will detract them.

Also leaving a plate of honey out with a 20watt or so light bulb suspended over it will trap them. They jump for the light and land in the honey.

Avoid the bomb if possible as it's ALOT of clean-up afterwards.

get the animal a flea bath and a collar.
We had a minor infestation last year, we called terminix, and since we only have one room with carpet they said in the end the bomb would be a waste of time and money since that's where it's most effective.

I used the above methods, and had them do an interior and exterior spray and had no further issues. I would also recommend a flea and tick spray for your yard.

Take a metal bowl full of water and some dish soap, shine a trouble light into it, they will jump in the water and cant get out. I am telling you it will work and get all the fleas out. Ive done it before with GREAT SUCCESS in a house with real bad fleas.

X2 on these, I haven't heard of the honey as Sandals mentioned, or if it has to be a metal bowl, but a girl i used to date used this method with great success.

She had glass endtables and we turned on my mag light and stood it on end on the table top, shining into a plastic bowl full of water and flea shampoo beneath the table. Then left the room as dark as possible and hours later there were lots of fleas in the bowl. Also, don't fill the bowl completely, leave about an eighth or quarter inch from the rim.
