The sad part is that when I first read that, I had interpreted it as "he rode off the edge" which is almost believable, especially on the Dragon. Maybe not on that particular section (with the wide ass parking lot/ rest area), but definitely happens a lot.

I think it's worse that he was actually moving slow and dropped it off the pavement. Target fixation for the loss, perhaps? So busy looking at the edge that he rode right past it?
