I was trying to suprise my family I hadn't seen in several years by showing up unannounced at a graduation party. Instead of going the way I usually go I took google maps' suggested route. It pulled me off 131 and straight onto seasonal roads that were all washed out. If I wasn't an experienced driver, I would probably still be walking... And trying to get reception on my cell phone.

I feel very sorry for this woman. She is going to have to live the rest of her life with guilt over her son's death.

I can't see the video hear at work, but does it say how far she drove after the flat? I'm guessing she must have been a hell of a long way if she decided to just stay and not follow her tracks back.

I think Bigbchevy meant that she shouldn't have gone without another vehicle with her, not that she should have had additional people in the vehicle. I couldn't agree more. This poor woman is going to be a wreck over making a few bad decisions that cost her the life of her child.

I do wonder how a nurse, someone who should be well versed in the dangers of dehydration, would go through all that water so quickly.

I drove through around the southern part of China Lake, through Trona and into the Pannamint valley and then into Death Valley itself a few years ago on a day that reached 126 degrees.

Cell service is laughable at best. None in Death Valley proper and very little in the National Park as a whole. Or the surrounding area. What service there is can be limited to a few square yards. I know this from experience.

In the Pannamint Valley (south west part of the National ParK0, if we had broken down, who knows how long it would have taken to be found.......on the single paved road heading north out of Trona. We only saw a couple of vehicles in a 70 miles stretch. I would love to wheel the area, but would never think of it without at least 1 other vehicle and checking in with park rangers.

They said she recently moved to the area. She had enough sense to bring a case of water. But she did not foresee a worst case scnario. Unfortunate lack of experience.

I feel very sad for her loss.
