Default 1974 F100 4x4 questions

I have been looking to get a 77 and under F series truck for a while. I found a 74 with a 10" lift from BDS, 460, C6, and the factory 9inch and D44 in the front. It comes with pretty much brand new 38x15.5x15 boggers. Body is pretty rough, has stock 3.55 gears, and seems to go into second gear a bit rough. I think I can get this truck for $1200. First off does this seem like a decent deal? I will have to go about 600 miles to get it....its by my sisters house in MO. How strong are the axles, and C6 for tires that big?

i had a 76 f100 with same axles and 40" swampers, and i kept blowing the rear axle up and stripped the front spider gears out a couple of times. that was with the 360 4 speed top loader trans, and the transfer case went from 2 wheel to 4 wheel. i don't think you'll have a problem with the trans or transfer case.

Get it, run it, See how long they last. Engine, trans & tcase no problem. Check the area when you are on the way to get them.
Should find a set of 60's for about a grand somewhere between here & there. Makes the trip worth while.

Had a '76 f250 with 40's 390 4 speed with a d44 up front keep braking Axel shafts at joint. '78 f150 I had before that with 35's and a 351m 4 speed didn't have problem breaking the rear 9 either. I'd go for bigger axels with 38's personally
