Default looking for a puppy... found, now a name...

So my girlfriend has talked me into getting a puppy. Only trouble is she seems to want the rarest dog known to michigan ha. We are looking for a female brittany spaniel and cant find anything on craigslist or in the paper. Any of you guys have an idea? The closer to west michigan the better but im willing to drive a little ways for one.

Thanks for the help

Try the Kalamazoo Animal Rescue. One of the GL member's wife does a lot with them.

I did see this one and called on them but they are a little pricey from what I have seen and I don't wanna go THAT far. That's like a three-four hour drive for me.

There is one on puppyfind.com, not sure where she is in Mich but she is 13 weeks old and $300. To be able to see the location I think its like $3.95 for a one month member ship....

Posting this for KT from the Kalamazoo Animal Rescue:

Many animal lovers would encourage anyone looking to get a pet to think adoption as the first option. There are dogs "in need" available everyday and 30% of them are purebred, so the chances of finding that perfect dog for your household is high if you give it some time and energy! And, animal welfare organizations (including breed specific rescues) are grateful to those looking to provide a permanent loving home!

In fact, right now there is a Brittany at the shelter in Kalamazoo (FYI: all animals past their adoption date are in danger of euthanization): http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/dis...petid=14331287

Please check www.petfinder.com frequently as new dogs become available all the time.

And, don't forget about BRITTANY RESCUE of Michigan: http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/MI637.html

Despite the "Don't shop, Adopt" adage, for many reasons people want to look into buying a pet, but not all breeders are created equal and it is important to support ONLY those who are not contributing to the pet overpopulation crisis.

This reasoning is two-fold: one obvious interest is preventing new pets from entering an overburdened system, and the other is protecting the consumer (you) from dogs w/health, temperament and behavior problems.

Many people unknowingly support irresponsible breeders by buying from pet stores and the internet (websites and Craigs List) where the animals usually come from puppy mills, but ALSO by buying from magazines and even newpapers can be just as bad. The people may be very nice and there may be no doubt that they love their pets, however if they do not follow a distinct set of criteria they are what even other reputable breeders call "backyard" or irresponsible breeders. Some call themselves "hobby breeders," however always remember just like with anything, BUYER BEWARE.

[Just recently I heard of a case w/a spaniel from a newspaper classified that a couple chose because the fee was cheaper, and now the dog pees all over because it cannot control it (a sign of poor breeding)].

Good news is, there are a lot of responsible breeders out there and here are the most basic of the basic criteria:

1) Parents are genetically tested for predominant health issues of the breed and are certified. Registration "papers" mean very little, so interested buyers should Always, Always, Always request a vet reference and call the vet to confirm the care and overall health of the dog. By ignoring this simple rule, many a buyer has ended up with a dog that has severe health or other issues and/or "money pit" dogs.

2) Offer some sort of reasonable return policy, lemon policy and take the dog back in the event it needs to be rehomed at sometime in the future. No responsible breeder would let one of their dogs end up in a rescue or shelter situation.

3) Do NOT sell puppies younger than 8 weeks and require spay/neuter contract to protect their dogs from ending up in an inappropriate breeding situation.

For a more detailed list here is a guide to supporting a good breeder:
http://www.hsus.org/web-files/PDF/Good_breeder.pdf

Here are mire excellent "tips" likely to be helpful: http://stoppuppymills.org/puppy_buying_tips.html

Thank you,
kt

+1 for adopting.

I'm sure brittanys are nice, but my two adopted dags are way cooler. You should adopt, unless you're looking for a purebred dog to take birdhunting, you're denying a hunter a good dog and denying an adoptable dog a good home.

that is the plan, i actually plan to field trial the dog as well. i have always had golden retrievers and i ran trials with them and used them to bird hunt. but she wants a smaller dog and loves brittany's. i will give it to ya those dogs are pretty cool lookin though. im totally open to adopting its just been tough to find a brittany thats younger. we have been searchin for the past 2 months which is why i thought i give on here a shot. thanks for your help thus far guys!
