Default Silver Lake rant

OK....So my family and I were on vacation this past weekend. Spent Friday, Sat and Sun meandering around Muskegon, Grand Haven and the various city and state park beaches. Ive been wanting to take the family to Silver Lake for some time, and rounded the tail end of the vacation out there.

Monday...it rained all night. We got there just after 9 and were the 2nd ones out in the dunes. Ive been there several times with my son, but Ive been telling my wife how cool it would be to make a day of dorking around and swimming/lunch at the beach.

The actual beach that fronts Lake Michigan is by far the nastiest beach we have set foot on in MI. I dont know if its normally like this, or if it was due to being a monday....There was trash littered about. Someone brought a full size propane grill, and left it there. There were fish carcasses around the grill that the seagulls were cleaning up. There were inflatable "toys" anchored (or something, they werent moving with the current) just off the beach. They were hardly inflated anymore.

The general lack of consideration for other visitors to the State Park from the previous visitors has turned me off to the dunes section. I think its appalling that the beach was left in the condition it was.

rant off.

Was around Silver Lake / Muskegon / Grand Haven this past weekend as well. Which beach did you go to? We spent some time at the one across from the Duck Lake State Park entrance on the curve of road. Pretty clean. Only thing I remember seeing is a random sandal and maybe one pop bottle around in the sand.

Im specifically talking about the section of beach along Lake Michigan in the ORV part of the park. Down on the flat with all the water holes. I believe its where people do all the drags.

Oh...and the number of tire tracks outside the ORV boundry. How many hundreds of acres to drive on and folks have to be stupid by weaving around the boundry markers?

I was disgusted....and more so than normal because I had my family with me.

There is always some assholes that make it bad for everyone else. It is just the way it goes, only way to change it is to do something about it.

I wouldn't judge the place on this one time. I've been going a few times a year for 15 years now and NEVER saw the beach like that.
Better luck next time.

I was there on Sunday, we only went to the beach for a few minutes but I didn't really notice anything. I do know that throughout the day the beach kept getting busier. At one point it seemed like there was at least one row of trucks from end to end. It sucks that it was destoyed but I'm sure if you you went back next weekend it would look fine. They made $6 per tow vehicle and every orv out there and it was pretty busy plus they were writing tickets all day long for people rollin through that stop sign right before you get back to the parking lot from the dunes. I'm sure they made good money this past weekend and they will have people cleaning it up. If I were to take the family there to go swimming I would probably just go to Silver Lake on the the foot traffic side of the dunes instead of lake michigan. The water is warmer and better beach for swimming imo.

You can always file a complaint with the Park and see if they were having issue with clean up personal? maybe the beach was nasty cause someone didn't come in early?

There are some slobs no matter where you go. Most people don't even realize that their stuff has bounced out of their vehicle. I have seen things bounce out and they drive off not even looking back. You should have gone down to the parking lot and complained. I will be going up on Thursday morning & if it is still messy I will pick it up.

I'm currently here at Silver Lake. My wife and I walked for about an hour along the shoreline south through the pedestrian area. To me, it was pretty much the same as every year. You need to remember that everything washed up on the shore comes from somewhere else, not the dune users. I also noticed the BBQ grill but never went close to it to inspect.

The beach as a whole sucks this year because with the lower lake levels in the past few years that the dry sand has blown inland. Now that the water level is coming back up, the beach area is extremely wet. Unless the DNR decides to move a lot of sand in from somewhere else, I believe the beach will never return to it's old state.

I have to agree that there are a lot of lazy careless people who let bottles and wrappers blow out of their rigs and never bother to pick them up. It's a shame really.

Pics or it didn't happen. I was there walking on the beach Sunday evening and stopped briefly on Monday afternoon and it was reasonably clean.
