While I love Top Gear, its current format is very difficult to translate into an American version. As a broad generalization American's are used to drag racing and Nascar. Europeans are more used to road courses, making alot of turns and technical driving. Also for most Europeans driving is a privilege not a "right" as it is for us Americans.

They actually asked him to but he turned down the offer because he thought that they wouldn't be able to get away with the same kind of criticism in the US that the Brits do. Now there's talk of Adam Corolla and Tanner Foust hosting the US version.

I just think a show like that should have a host that is as nuts about cars as the viewers.

I also don't think it would be that great. Half of the reason I watch is for the cool accents and witty foreign humor. Not to mention them making fun of the US. Lose that stuff, and the show is not as cool.

this is america. if we made a show like that here we would be bound by all types of bullshit rules as to not offend anyone and the show would suck. america simply doesn't have the balls to make a show as good as top gear.

That's what I thought at first too. But I guess that must be why they have Tanner Foust, who is a rally car racer and the current host of Super Cars Exposed. The last I heard was they are still waiting for a network to pick up the show since one of the prime time networks already turned it down.
