Default aaarrrrggghhhh cell phones.......

So I REALLY need a new phone. Mine is 3+ years old, and i'm paying too much for the plan i have.

Right now i'm with Sprint/Nextel. So the choice comes down to, do i get a blackberry and stay with sprint, or
Get an iphone and switch to ATT.

I've never had an issue anywhere with my service (i travel alot) so of course i'm hesitant to switch providers. especially since i've been with nextel since 1998.

but an iphone would be nice.
cost isn't an issue as it appears I can get similar plans from either carrier, and phone prices are pretty similar.

so, comments one way or the other?

Zing! I definitely would get one. The 3g is only $99 bucks now. I just got one a month ago, and don't know how I ever went without one.

You'll be hooked as soon as you power it on the first time.

Asking peoples opinions about cell phone providers is about like asking if you should buy a Ford or Chevy. People tend to either really like or really dislike one over the other, for no real reason. I have never had a problem with coverage on any network, or had any problems with any provider.

I just picked up the BB Curve and love it! And I am happy so far with my service with Sprint.

BTW... the only other phone worth buying right now (if for some reason you don't get an iPhone) is the Palm Pre. (Assuming you don't need the blackberry message/mail stuff for work)

And at $99 for the iPhone, there's no reason not to.

ok, but if i get an iphone, there's no way in hell i'd only get the 3G, it'd be a 3Gs 32gb, and run me $300 lol

I'm more interested in service and drop-outs.
I'm generally in larger cities, but, i know there are issues even there.
i.e. the site i was at the last 2 months my nextel had full service, where EVERYONE else there had crappy or no service, amongst, At&T, verizon, t-mobile.
And this was in downtown chicago.

I have had spring, nextel, t-mobile, and verizon. Had a couple phones on each, and by far the best phone I Jane had is the iPhone. Nothing comes close for service

I'd say that was due more to the phones themselves than the carriers. I've got a motorola phone (3yrs old as well) and my wife has a samsung. Her reception is crap compared to mine. I can get reception a lot of places most people cant.

AT&T Service is why I didn't get an iPhone. I had Ameritech, then it went to Cingular and I could never get a signal, I could never talk on the phone without a dropped call. My mom stuck with them into AT&T and we can never hear her but she refuses to leave them.

I wish I had kept my Nextel for the service, I switched to verizon earlier this year to get a smartphone and my wife's work discount. I can count on 2 hands how many dropped calls I had over 8 years with Nextel.

We just switched from alltel to at&t Saturday. I had alltel for over 10 years with out a problem. Great service no problems getting signal anywhere then Verizon came into the picture. I started having problems getting signal in places I never had a problem before. Started seeing roaming charges from Canada when we were never within 200 miles of the Boarder at the time the call was placed. Had to argue with customer service to get them to remove the chgs. The customer service since Verizon came into the picture had gone in the crapper. I hate nextel with a passion. Had it through a company I worked for and never had good reception anywhere I was. Many times my company would have to call me on my personal phone to reach me because the nextel didn't have signal. I have heard good and bad about all companies that offer cell service and decided that it is a crap shoot no matter who you go with. I didn't go with the iphone mainly because I don't need all that crap and the app's chgs could add up and make your final bill ridiculous. Time will tell if I am happy with my decision or not.

Huh?

You don't get charged for anything iPhone specific on your bill. You just pay for your plan and unlimited data plan, etc... I have never, ever had to pay over my designated billing amount. There are no app charges.

I have never paid for an app in the app store, there are plenty to keep you going for free.

I have had Nextel / Sprint both individually before the merger and still do (sprint). Always happy with service. I travel a lot also. I'm getting a Pre next month. You can still merge it to your company email. It is a Palm based phone so outlook is great and you can easily get your Gmail & Yahoo. I have had BrickBerry's since 2005. on top of that I have had the Simply Everything plan since it came out and I love it. My bill with Tax and Insurance is $116 every month. Total. I use between 2500-4000 minuets every month and god knows how many text's.

Maybe I read it wrong but not all apps are included and there is an extra chg for some of those apps. Besides the $30 per month "on top of the service plan" for the data plan is not acceptible to me. But then I'm old and cheap.

Umm, the iphone comes with a few basic things such as youtube, compass, mail, etc. After that it is up to you do put on whatever apps you choose. There are many free apps, though a lot of the apps are complete crap and I have no idea why apple approved them.

A) Don't expect that to continue with the G1 forever, once the Android platform takes off, if it ever does.

B) If there isn't a free app in the app store to do something, it's probably available on Cydia via jailbreak

C) There really isn't a need for most of the for-pay applications. They're not forcing you to buy them. And if it's something really cool, oh well, so you have 1 thing to pay for. As I said, I haven't paid for a single app, nor do I have any desire to, and I use mine heavily.

D) I would venture a guess that there are far more apps in the app store, so your percentages probably aren't relevant. Try comparing the actual count of free apps for Android versus app store.

x2, if I were in a position to leave Verizon, I'd have the Palm Pre. And that's coming from an Apple guy.
