New Computer Suggestions

I'm looking to buy a new computer here soon to upgrade my laptop for school. I don't know alot about computers but I'm not dumb either. The only real things I want is at least 4GB of RAM and to keep the price under $1,200. I don't really want a Mac either , I love my Iphone but I hate my brothers Mac computer.

I know there are quite a few people on here who know alot that can steer me in the right direction. I want honest advice not what somebody at a big box store is going to try and sell me on. Thanks in advance for all your help !!!

If this is in the wrong spot sorry.

I bought an IMB think pad for a $100. Had XP and more memory installed. I'm gelling.

Are they really that much better than a PC ? The only one Ive ever used was my brothers and its full of crap he has downloaded so I could have jumped to a bad conclusion. They just seem to be quite a bit more expensive for what your getting compared to a PC.

Bought my kid one of these in January.
http://www.amazon.com/Acer-AS5735-66...9351668&sr=8-1
She does Web, Messaging, MS Office and GIMP pretty much all day long.

EDIT: Should add that she's starting college with it this fall.

I won't buy anything other than a Dell. I've had decent luck with custom built computers, but only decent. I haven't seen a company that purchases anything other than Dell in at least 6 years (not saying they don't, but I haven't seen them).

My only recommendation is to run far away from anything that says "HP" on it. If they become the only computer company in the world, I will be without a computer. It is not even close to worth the hassle that you are guaranteed to have with them if you need to add any program other than Outlook Express.

Dell has been great with helping me to set up my computer even when it was my stupid self typing in the wrong set-up parameters while installing my $12k worth of design programs. My 2004 Dell laptop is still running great and has never been serviced except when I spilled a can of Coke on the keyboard.

There is a reason that no company in the free world other than Apple uses Mac computers. (I actually can't say anything bad about them other than that the prices are rediculous and I don't know of anyone running any major software (CAD) on them. I just couldn't resist the chance to rile up some Mac users.)

There's nothing better about them. Unless you prefer OSX, and don't want to do the slightly illegal thing and install it yourself on a "PC" system. They're on mostly equal footing with just about every other comparable piece of PC hardware out there. And yes, it can be rather expensive.

fail.

What's the reason "no company" uses them? Just because something is more widely used, does not equal better performance.

Your logic sucks.

That's like saying... Because more people drive them, a Ford Focus is a better vehicle than a Cadillac STS.

Many many large corporations use Lenovo or HP's business line. Especially within the IT sector.

Their corporate line is many many levels above their consumer line

As much as I hate Apples, this is totally untrue. There may not be many CAD apps, but there are plenty of 3D design apps, which is where a lot of the design work goes on. Many users are given the opportunity to choose an Apple these days. If I walk through work, I would say probably about half of the sales teams for vendors are running Apples. And anything in the creative arts sector is probably going to be running some OSX.

Laptop = Toshiba or Sony. First to some checking online to see how easy they are to replace parts. Some of the new laptops have easy access to most parts except motherboard. Just in case something does break.

Desktop = build your own and use newegg.com for parts. The customers rate everything and that makes it easy to decide what to buy.

Has for brands, that really hard to say, every company can build a lemon.

What are your needs? What will you be using it for? If it was a desk top I would just build it...A lap top I would buy one instead. Laptops take a lot of abuse so it is in your best interest to just buy one with an extended warranty if you plan on keeping it for a few years. If you are willing to take a chance you can get some nice used ones on craigslist for cheap. I am sure I could find a good one in the 3 to 4 hundred dollar range that will do anything you need it for.

I will never buy another Dell, how the last one I owned I had called them up asking what driver I needed for my display to install, how they had drivers for it on their website. Well the lady kept telling me they do not exist. I told her...HEY! I am on your website right now, there is about 20 different drivers designed for this model, I need to know which one....I never did end up getting that driver. 2 months later I went and got an HP, and have not switched brands since. About ready to go buy another HP laptop. Their customer service is amazing, and for their high end laptops, they are cheaper then most other brands.
