Default Bought, not built...

Met another Jeep owner in a parking lot last week and he made some snotty remark about his Jeep being built, not bought...

Okay, so I don't weld, and even if I did I'd have to upgrade my service panel to get adequate juice to my garage. That's the better part of $1,000.00 when all's added up, and that's if I do it myself.

I don't have room for machining equipment in my garage and nowhere else to put it, so most fab work is out.

Why would I buy an old Wrangler, then get a Ford 8.8 or D44 or whatever, aftermarket lockers, etc., etc. when I just bought an '04 Rubi with everything I want for less than I could have built a comparable Jeep for?

For some reason it seems to be a mortal sin to buy anything around here, but some of us aren't in a position to do most fabrication. If you pay someone that can then you are just buying it, really.

Besides, I do all my own wrenching, electrical, etc. Just pulled my D44's apart this weekend to replace shaft seals, so it's not like I'm some yuppy that goes to the dealer every other weekend and sits in the waiting room sipping coffee while the mechaninc calibrates his dyphlagmic balancer...

I have so many other hobbies and interests that even if I could fabricate everything I want I still wouldn't, because then I wouldn't have time for my other interests.

I'm no less a wheeler than those of you that built yours. I respect what you've done. Very much. But there's nothing wrong with my choice.

There is nothing wrong with how you are going about it. There is however something wrong with him even making that comment. I think it's great that some people have the time, money, and ability to build/fab their own stuff, but there is no reason to condemn someone who cannot. Enjoy your Jeep, who gives a shit if he likes how you are doing it?

how dare you have skills outside of fabrication that allow you to earn money to buy what you want! Go to JCR or UORC (professionals) and see what they say about that. If you can build or fab than that's awesome, but don't dog the people who can't.

I have no problem with people buying a built jeep or paying someones else to do the work on it.

I do have a problem with people who do the above, go wheeling on difficult trails, break, and than have no clue how to fix what broke.

People don't like it when they have more money than themselves.

And another thing I've learned is, people who have expensive rigs don't like people who's rig is more expensive... Hence why cc hates on gotrocks

Its usually the guys with the clapped out POS that pull the "built not bought" so don't worry about it.

more important that the shit is done right. I don't rebuild my own motors or transmissions. I have a professional do it. some things are left to the people who know what their doing.

Agreed, and that's not me, but if I do break something I have to BUY a replacement part. Sure, I still do the repair myself in most cases, but I'm buying the parts because I can't weld them back together, or turn them on a lathe, or mill my own upgrade.

Did you get any pictures or a screen name so we can look at their "fabrication" and make fun of them?

This is not a cheap sport by any means. Weather or not you build your own rig. Build it buy it what ever. Just do it safe.

Actually, his shit was really nice. He walked up while I was admiringly looking it over, and we talked at length about all the work he'd done. Then I told him about mine and that's when he made the crack and walked away.

Oh, and I asked him if he knew about GL4X4 and he said he didn't...... How wierd is that?

Well that's the thing though. I did the math and realized that people that spend a ton of money on upgrades (even if they've fabbed them) never get their money back out of them, so I actually saved a ton of money by getting them much cheaper already installed. The up-front cost may seem high, but I needed a new vehicle anyway (I still have my old one but it's just a little putt-putt), so instead of financing a car, I went for the Jeep and sacrificed on my commuter (instead of the other way around).

No wierd at all. He is most likely off tyring to build his own internets since he can't buy them, hence no GL.
