Heartworms....

Well I just got news this morning that my hunting partner tested positive for heartworms.... she's a 2 year old lab. Has anyone else had to deal with heartworms with their pets? I'm being told that I'm look at about $800.00 in tests, blood work, medicine, over night bording at the vet, etc..... I'm not really concerned about the $ but I am concerned about the whole treatment process and success rate. Any insight would be apprecaited.

My sister in laws dog had heartworms, did all the treatments and he came through just fine... Unfortunately he was hit by a car a couple weeks after he was done with treatments...

Mudhowg on this site has a lab that had it. It cost money, but the dog came through real well. Good Luck!

A buddy of mines dog had it years ago. If they catch it in time you should have nothing to worry about.

Was the dog on heartguard? If not that's kinda retarded. If a dog is on heartguard and comes down with heart worm the company pays for all the expenses..

Agreed. If anybodies dogs are not on heartguard, they don't deserve to have a pet.

Before you buy meds from a vet you may want to look into buying them from a farm supply. Price will be significantly less for the same medications.

at 2 yrs. shes young and the disease shouldnt be too far along. She should be fine. get her on heartworm meds. not only do they protect from heartworm they act as a monthly de-wormer. Sentinal brand has a flea and tick killer in it, which in itself is a major benifit as your dog will not contract lime disease and fleas f-ing suck. Also ask the vet about frontline topical gel. it as well protects from fleas and ticks. its like a necessity, especially for hunting dogs.

we have a 4 year old Blood hound that is going through the treatment right now. They started the processes yesterday and he is home on bed rest now. He whines alot, as he is in alot of pain. He will probably be down for about 3 weeks.

heart worms

I adopted a rot from the ingham county shelter and found out three days later that he has heartworms. Hes only 1 year old. He has been on the treatment for 2 weeks now and its tough because the dog cannot get his heart rate up at all or could cause a dissolving worm to clot in the lungs and die. Call around for different vets, I found a range of prices from $240-$1000. Some vets do more than others for treatment. I got it for $240 cause they felt sorry for me that the shelter would nothing for me but give me a free dog if i put this one down. Steroids were needed 3 days after treatment for the pain. Dog would do nothing but whine and yelp if you touched him or if he tried to lay or sit. Six weeks of no playing or exercize. Its worth it. Good luck

Thats awefully shitty of them. i volunteer for last day dog rescue and we pick up dogs from places like that. ones they dont want to deal with or spend money on. its sad as hell. luckily we have lots of generous ppl in the community, which allows us to care for these animals, no matter the cost. but back to the point. its good to know that there are ppl out there who spend their time and money on these animals, especially in your case where you only had the dog for 3 days.

Heartworm with the flea and tick in the summer and the heartworm pill in the winter. It is a must with him drinking out of water/mud puddles while out hunting. Does anyone else have a lewellin setter that drools a lot?
