Thumbs down Manistee National Forrest-Bitely

For those of you who haven't looked in the trails forum, I thought I'd give you a heads up. All the trails West of Bitely have been closed by the Forrestry service. about 10 yards of dirt dumped in each trail, regardless of whether it had a 4 digit marker or not. The only trails open lead directly to the small campgrounds around the small lakes in there. The ranger I talked to said it was because of all the bypasses being made around the mudholes. I can think of only one trail that has a new bypass around a mudhole. This decision was made by the same guy that harrassed the Cedar Creek group and showed up at one of our trail rides and gave us crap before anyone left the parking lot. So one 4wheel hater has shut us down. Before long we'll all have to trailer our rigs to Twisted Trails or Rocks and Valley's just to have a legal place to ride. Which sucks because Cedar Creek and Bitely are close by for me. Nothing against either park, I just prefer to have a DD that I can take out close to home.

I don't have photos, we were headed out for a night ride, had the wives and kids along. As for gps coordinates, no but I think I have a map of the area on my work pc. I'll try to mark them as close as possible and shoot it to you in a PM.
As far as the guy overstepping his authority, I can't say that he did. I was told that the orders to block the trails came for the Baldwin District Manager, Les. He's the same person who harassed a group of us about a month ago when we went for a trail ride up there. He met us in the parking lot where we all met. I believe he's also the guy who went after the Cedar Creek group on this site.

Road closures in the Toyaibe (my experience) were spelled out well in advance.
Public meetings about any closures were usually pretty robust with the locals voicing opposition.

The guy might have grown badge-penis and took matters into his own hands.

Public lands, this land is your land, this land is my land.

Quote:
This land is your land This land is my land
From California to the New York island;
From the red wood forest to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and Me.

As I was walking that ribbon of highway,
I saw above me that endless skyway:
I saw below me that golden valley:
This land was made for you and me.

I've roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts;
And all around me a voice was sounding:
This land was made for you and me.

When the sun came shining, and I was strolling,
And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling,
As the fog was lifting a voice was chanting:
This land was made for you and me.

As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing,
That side was made for you and me.

In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?

Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me.

This IS public property, it belongs to all of us.
Where they get off I have no effing idea.
This too shall be looked into and if they're in the wrong it WILL be righted.
Someone really needs to get out there and take pictures of these freshly closed trials,
particularly the ones that have the four digit markers on them, also needed are gps coordinates.
If I had GPS I would do it myself.

I told Clarston that I'd PM him a map with the locations, but the Map I had sucks when you enlarge a small area. Instead I'll describe the locations as best as I can. The first one was at the end of 14 mile when you head West from M-37. Right where the road ends there was an old two track that went to Condon Lake, Dirt pile right there at the start. The second pile was back further in on the forrest service road that goes NorthWest from the end of 14 mile. It's a trail that used to cut back over to the trail going to Condon Lake. Just beyond that was another trail that headed Southwest toward Condon Lake also. This one had four digit markers and wasn't blocked off until you got back in about 1/4 mile. Going Noethwest again on the forrestry road the trail y's and the trail to the left goes back to camping by Nausung? Lake. If you go straight through the y you'll come to another split in the trail. Taking the left side of the split takes you to a trail that skirted the edge of a swamp and then came out on 16 mile. This route was blocked about 50' past a gated service road. Taking the right side of the split takes you North to Walkup Lake campground. Pass that and the road is gravel going out to 15 mile, but along the gravel road is a trail to the Northwest that comes out on 16 mile where the swamp trail came out. This is blocked also. Wheere the two trails came out on 16 mile is a marked trail that is blocked at the entrance. This trail used to be specifically marked as an OHV trail. More of these trails were marked with the 4 digit signs but I don't specifically remember which ones. I would get pictures and gps myself, but I'm in Muskegon and like to run these trails when I stay at my In-Laws cabin South of Bitely.
Apparently these were not the only trails closed, there was a petition to open the National Forest trails being circulated at the Trout-o-rama this past weekend.

I hate to sound like a smart a$$, but at least if they berm off the "illegal" roads in the forest we won't have to guess which ones are allowed under the new MVUM process. Maybe then the impact will be broad enough that the bird watchers, mushroom pickers, fishermen, campers, hunters, geocachers and others users of our public lands will wake up to what the NFS is doing. The NFS works for us, but until their bosses get the message from our elected officials in Washington this will continue to be a battle.

The idea is supposed to be protecting the public lands FOR the people, not FROM the people (can't remember who I stole that from).

Its not just the Bitely area, its also the Pines Point and Whitehall areas,
as well as many many many others I have yet to visit this season.
They started closing trails in there four ...maybe five years ago.
It is now for the most part a straight shot in and out.
There is NO vehicle access to any fishing or camping.
ALL trails that are not on that straight shot have been blocked by the rangers
with their mighty chain saws and post hole diggers. insert finger smiley here

We went out there recently to see what was left and noticed there are a hell of a lot of
post that have been torn out by users, not rangers.
I can't help but think this is going to make "Ranger Mc Awesome"
put a huge gate in front of the main trail in and make it all foot and horse traffic.

There is NO place in nature to wheel that is legal.

I will not sit back and watch them steal my play ground!
The single thing I truely love about Michigan...

Its woods. The most serene beautiful place on earth.

...the trails, my access to the best fishing holes anywhere,
and the best primitive camping anyone could ever imagine.

if fallen trees and dirt piles won't stop them, what makes you think some flimsey gate will?

Here's a map of that area:

Higher res PDF of the same:
http://www.vvmapping.com/public/VVMapBitelyZoom.pdf

Baldwin Ranger District told us during one of our permit processes that most of the forest roads would be closed in that specific area. I believe that was a couple years ago, that they were planning on it.

They've been closing stuff around there for years, bummer for certain.

I didn't realize that you've actually mapped all those trails until I read your website. Pretty impressive.

Pictures are worth a thousand words so I printed a copy of your amp and marked it for where the berms are. There are two small trail sections that I added to your map, the one near the center I believe had been bermed off once before,but it had a FS marker on it. The other section directly at the end of 14 mile was the original trail to Condon Lake and was pretty tight for anything but a quad or a Samurai.
Thanks for the map, great detail. I was very impressed by your site also, so I downloaded your free set of Southern Michigan maps.
Muskegon ZJ Gurl, I've been out around Pines Point also, and even a couple of years back most of the trails had been closed. It's a shame we can't have more say in the running of OUR forrest's. But the people that run over the berms and move the stumps and posts to gain access again do nothing but make us all look bad.
