i need to replace the 2.5l engine in my jeep... when looking for a replacement, what years are the same as a 2002? i had a guy offer me one out of a '94 that i would obviously freshen up.... but not sure if its the same block or not... all i need is a shortblock...

Well I don't want to point out the obvious, but a 2002 is the same year as a 2002, so there's one...
This isn't for a TJ but rather an XJ, on Jeep Horizons it says:

"2.5L I4 MPI (multi-port injection) - 130 hp @ 5250 rpm, 139 ft lb @ 3250 rpm - used in 91-00"
For Google, I got this link:
http://www.jeepforum.com/wiki/index.php/2.5L_I-4
Which says:
"The AMC I-4 appeared in 1984 with the new XJ Cherokee and was produced through 2002 for the Jeep Wrangler and Dodge Dakota pickup, which used the AMC/Jeep designed four since 1996."
And also says:
"The final production year used sequential mulitple-port fuel injection. For comparison, the 4.2L I-6 produced 112 HP @ 3,200 rpm and 210 ft lbs of torque @ 2,000 rpm in its final year with the computer controlled carburetor."
And also:
Applications

This engine was used in the following vehicles:

* 1984-1986 Jeep CJ-7
* 1983.5-1984 AMC Eagle
* 1984-2000 Jeep Cherokee (XJ)
* 1986-1992 Jeep Comanche (MJ)
* 1987-2002 Jeep Wrangler (YJ/TJ)
* 1988-1989 Eagle Premier
* 1996-2002 Dodge Dakota

Also, for Wikipedia on the Jeep Wrangler, the YJ 2.5L basic specs:
2.5 L AMC 150 I4
Complete engine specs[hide]
•Displacement: 150.4 CID (2,465 cc)
•Stroke: 3.188 in (81 mm)
•Bore: 3.875 in (98 mm)
•Power: varied
•Torque: varied
•Fuel Type: Gasoline
And the TJ:
2.5 L AMC 150 I4
Complete engine specs[hide]
•Displacement: 150.4 CID (2,465 cc)
•Stroke: 3.188 in (81 mm)
•Bore: 3.875 in (98 mm)
•Power: varied
•Torque: varied
•Fuel Type: Gasoline

Posting in the wrong forum risks getting a retard icon.....

Aaaand....

If you are willing to 'freshen up' a 94, what's wrong with your engine that you can't rebuild it?

Nope, posting tech in the offtopic section like this just gets you douchie responses. For good reason though

The tech section is there for a reason, use the fucking thing, so when the next person has the problem they can easily find it with a SEARCH

YJ: The Jeep Wrangler model built from 1987-1996.
TJ: The Jeep Wrangler model built form 1997-Current.
ZJ: The Grand Cherokee built from 1993-1998.
WJ: The current Grand Cherokee model built from 1999-current.
KJ: The new Jeep Liberty.

--from https://secure.bluehost.com/~gotword...ng/jeepid.html

so it looks like anything from 1997-current, from a Wrangler model, with a 2.5 SHOULD be a direct swap.
