body lift is the only cheap thing you can do. superlift makes a kit but there around 1600 bucks and you will also need a new front driveshaft for another 400.

if i had 2K to drop i would put a solid front axle under it

just throwing an axle under it doesn't give you lift.

not sure if this helps much, but I put 285/75-16's (32.8 diam) on a stock 99 Ranger sport, and the only rubbing that has ever occured is just barely on the front sway bar, which I can only tell that by the paint rubbing off of the sway bar, never felt it touch at all...maybe there are some parts that can be swapped from the Ranger to get them to fit, not sure, but something to look into

33's might take a little work, but I suggest this:

2-3" body lift.

Extended shackles (rear)

T-bar crank up front (I think those years have t-bars sill?)

This will be roughly 4" lift over stock, but because of the fender shape, you might still get a bit of rubbing. You might have slightly better luck with a 33x10.5 too.

I'm running 33x12.5 on my 96 Explorer with torsion bars cranked, warrior 153 shackles, and a 3" Performance accesories body lift. Also a minor amount or trimming. Its about 5 1/2" to 6" of lift.

Look at my 97 Explorer. Cheap ass lift. Crank the torsion bars, Have the rear leafs done to make it match, 2 inch body lift. The rear doors are way too close to the fenders which is why they don't make a flare kit for it, at least not 3 years ago when I did mine. I fit 33" BFG and Claws with no problem on 15x8 rims. I also had to make upper control arms though to get the camber/caster right. Total cost was around $200.00. But I would LOVE the superlift kit which is a 4" lift.

i would say put your money into an aussie locker for the rear and 31s. you will go farther than opens and 33s, and 31s are easier to fit.

The rear may already have a very good limited slip. I replaced mine last year and it made a huge difference. Obviously my original one wasn't working worth a poop. I am not happy with 33's and 4:56 gears so I understand 31's sucking also. There is A LOT to drag under these body styles and the suspension sucks when it comes to articulation. I have the locker, gears, power, and 33's but a lot of the time I have to gun it up and over things if there are a lot of holes here and there. But it makes it! I am hoping for the 4" lift and then some 35's in the future.
