what is the best stock to build them out of??? other than solid??

I use 2"x1/4"wall DOM and make weld in threaded bungs for the end

1.75x.25" minumum, 2.0x.25" is common, 1.75x.188" heat treated chromoly is the new hotness, solid 2.0" 7075 aluminum is up there but not as "flexible" to work with/weld to, 1.75" 7075 is the minumum for lowers. you can fabricate links out of .125" .188 or .25" wall materials if you want, it just takes some careful fixturing.

solid is stupid, the inner 75% of the material does virtually nothing for strength, hollow is the strongest/weight and nobody uses hollow aluminum because it will dent and lose all of it's strength.

usually just hot rolled that I turn on my cnc and thread, but if some one wants I can make them out of 4140 or anything really.
