I take at least two with me all the time to the dunes when we are going to the beach.

We take ours often. I don't know what the official rules are, but we keep her on a leash ALL of the time and let her go potty in the heavily treed patches. When we stop at the DNR check point on the way in, they have given her a pet on the head and never said anything about needing to have her restrained. She is an agressive breed dog (American Staffordshire Terrier) that loves people, but can get pretty mean around other dogs, so we don't take her out of the truck unless we are in a relitively secluded area and we never take her on the beach.
