Brown signs with 4 vertical numbers

I was in baldwin at my girlfriends cottage and noticed a ton of trails that have a brown stake/sign with 4 vertical numbers on them...

What are these and are they legal?

I thought it might be some kind of seasonal road...

I believe those are USFS roads, but I do not know the legality of them - especially since the ones I've seen can be barely big enough for a motorcycle to fit down.

All 4 digit Manistee National Forest Roads are legal for all Secretary of State licensed vehicles unless bermed or otherwise posted closed.

Horizontal numbered roads are said to be travel-able by any wheeled vehicle (although not a law nor guideline IN THIS CASE ONLY). Where as the vertical numbers are "high clearance vehicles only". This is according to the DNR maps you can pick up at the Bull Gap trailheads. The "grandma's Buick law" doesn't apply in the National Forest. As said before, all numbered roads are posted unless burmed or signed otherwise.
