Default Tow rig Decisions

Okay tired of the gasser tow rigs. Looking at buying a Diesel. Looks like my price range puts me into a early-mid 90's truck. Been looking at alot of f250-350 srw and drw trucks. But I am mostly a ford guy, but should I be looking at dodge and chevy as well?

What should I stay away from? Or look for?

id stay away from the chevys of that vintage. you really cant complain about a 12vavle dodge at all. they will do anything with very little work. will pull anything. in those years isnt ford still a 7.3 idi motor?

I had no idea what IDI was so I looked it up.

This is what I found. No idea if it is helpful but here it is anyway

there was a nice IDI one on here with shorty stacks for a good price. If I remember right it had pretty low miles. 4x4,LB,supercab,auto. Can't remember who had it listed though.

id say if your going to get a ford get the 7.3 powerstroke not the idi. powerstrokes tow better imo. but you can never go wrong with a 12v cummins but make sure its around a 94+ the old D250's and W250's dont have as much power i dont believe.

they can make alot of power out of the old cummins. fuel plate and playing with the pump you can make an extra 300 horse with 30 dollars spent. just need a set of guages. all hail the mighty 12 vavle

he said his price range was in the mid 90s. that doesnt put the 6.0 anywhere near that price range.

I am actually exchanging emails with this one for the last day or so. I have about 6 craiglists ads through out the state I have been talking to figuring out which one I want to go and look at.

Working on the trucks/maintaining doesn't bother me. I'm an mechanic, just have NO expeirence with diesels. And I buy everything at cost from my vendors.

Go with the older Cummins for sure, theyll pull the house down, and like boggin said...30-50$ and you got yourself a lot more horsepower

3-4K

I really like the 92-97 fords.

Ultimately I would like a 92-97 crew srw 4x4 250 or 350 ford.

But am not opposed to a dually 2wd either or a crew 2wd. I have a few trucks lined up to look at it, just need to make the time to drive and see them.

You can't go wrong with a Cummins.
My 2002, 24v has 175k, has made 6 cross country (Florida, California, Nevada) trips towing.
Plenty of power, torque and reliable.

Gratuitous photo op

I don't think I could live with myself if I owned a dodge (but the cummins are bad ass).
