its a running joke in the family....its manly so he can get his and my uncles recreational fishing boat out so they don't have to pay for another slip in the marina. He dose fishing charters out of Alpena, he takes out people from all over the country.. getting payed to do and share what he loves with others not a bad job.
And because the lake levels have been so low needs all the extra dock to get deep enough for the hoist.

I believe ownership rights end at the waters edge.... It would seem that it would be illegal to obstruct a navigitable federal waterway....

They don't own the lake, most lakefronters like to think that it is their property but its not. Im not even sure if they can legally tell you to get off from their dock.

They sure do, It's their property, and it is attached to their property. Lakefront owners own the lake bottom from their property lines to the center point of the lake. It is true that they cannot unreasonably encroach on the use of the lakes surface by others, and individual lakes may have dock length restrictions, but a dock placed within that triangle from the corners of the lot line to the center of the lake is private property.

Wrong. I can legally walk around a whole lake on the grass with no issues. Lake front owners don't own the first 5 feet from shore. They deff don't own to the center of the lake, that's idiotic

Nope, sorry you're wrong. You may be thinking about river laws with concern to high water mark. Navigable rivers are owned by the state up to the high water mark. So when rivers are low, the land between the water and the high water mark is state property. That, you do have access to legally. Lakes are a different story. Read up on Michigan Riparian Rights.

As far as the first 5 feet, that is a Canadian rule. In the US you own to the waters edge.

I don't have time to look up the law, but in the past five years, I believe it was modified to allow public rightaway from the high water line out. I don't remember if that was just for the "Great Lakes" or applied to inland lakes too.

EDIT, See: http://www.olemiss.edu/orgs/SGLC/Nat...r/4.4beach.htm

That only applies to the great lakes if you actually read through it you will see that.
