Default Is this boat worth saving?

Well I took a leap of faith and bought it.... 18' 1972 Slickcraft SS195. To make a long sotry short, after getting it home and working on it for the past couple weeks, I got it to start and run well but the lower unit was seized and cracked, the upper unit gears are sheared, and the bellhousing the upper unit is bolted to is cracked.... i.e. most of the outdrive is junk.

Should I dump money into a 37YO boat not knowing what it will be worth when done?

Here are a couple pics of it:

I don't really want to do that. I don't care for the outboard look.

And thanks, I think it looks nice (or at least has the potential). It still needs a good cleaning and the teak wood on the floor and bow need redone. But I think it would be a really sharp boat when redone.

Just look for another one with a messed up hull or a blown engine and swap the parts you need. You probably won't every get what you put into it back out of it but that's how it goes. Well that's how it goes for me. My dad has fixed boats in worse shape and sold them at a loss. I'm not sure they looked as good at that one when he was done tho.

yeah, that has crossed my mind. I know I am not going to get what I have into it, but I don't want to loose my ass on it either.

As long as you are gonna use it for a couple years then losing money on it isn't that big of a deal.

Did some diggin online last night. From the few good pics I have found of them, I don't think this is a 72. I believe it is a 68 (but could be from 66-69) which means it is a pre-AMF boat if that means anything.

It appears to be in good condition - at least with my knowledge.

I have a local guy that thinks he has one and I am waiting to hear back if he does of not. But I would still be interested in that number especially if they have older boats.

Did you buy the boat in Midland for 500 bucks? If you did I'm glad I skated on that deal (no money).

Thanks for the offer and I may take you up on that since I know nothing about boats (so far). I thought about contacting Tiara and seeing if they have records that go back that far to find out what year it is.

my 2 cents outdrivers are not cheap. if you plain on keeping the boat plain on spending up to 2 grand or more for an outdrive.it sounds like yours can not be fixed with out failure in the near future.
