How big is it? I think Michigans biggest spiders are wolf spiders.

I just smashed one of those in one of the flower beds. I don't normally kill bugs in the flowers or garden (especially spiders) but it was freaking out the wife and since I don't sleep with spiders it had to get flat. I don't know the species but it was huge.

It's a garden or Orb-weaving spider.

x100.
when I see a big spider and i'm with my daughter I don't want to tranfer the phobia so I silently shit my pants, make jokes & make a game of smashing them. I used to have a small calico cat that would hunt the grass spiders that got in the basement. she wasn't afraid of shit and i could send her after them in the tight spaces she would wound them and they would hobble out for me to finish the job

Yep, which means it's harmless, and good to have around! Scoop it up and toss it out in the weeds. No sense in killing it!

I doubt it. You were probably screaming like a girl and Kristie was probably laughing her ass off at you.

Definately looks like a variety of Orb spider. They sit with the legs pair like those fronts..

check out our wolf spiders that we caught in the house yesterday....

YOu actually answered your own question:

1) Its hanging out on your back door.

2) you described it as a big ass spider

Thats what it is, an Ass spider, a big one at that.
