We have had 3 canons, 3 kodak easy shares, and 1 Fuji. The fuji is hands down the best one we have but we also spent more on it. It is a S5200 and has a 10X zoom. We did not buy it to be as portable but strictly to take really nice pictures with lots of features. And it is a great camera.

Our canons have been hit and miss. They have been more portable. Our newest one is really slim and almost the entire back of it is a screen. Has a very fast refresh rate so it is ready to shoot again. Nice camera but we can not force the flash to stay on. It is either auto or off. And sometimes the pictures turn out blurry.

Kodaks are the best I've used for something really cheap. If I want a cheap camera for $100 or less to bring in my snowmobile or 4 wheeling I buy Kodak. For the money they take the best pictures and the batteries last forever and can be swapped for AA rechargables. The only negative with my cheap Kodaks is the refresh rate is slow. Seems like it takes 20 secs before it is ready to take another pic.

For what your girl friend wants (a better camera) would stay away from the real small ones and get something that costs a little more with really nice features. I would Look to Fuji, Canon or Nikon.
