Default Getting a Title for a boat

I am looking at getting a boat and the seller says there isn't a title. He doesn't seem shady, but should I be leary or is it going to be a hassle getting one? Is it like getting one for a car?

depends on the age of the boat, some boats just dont have them, if you are really concerned take the vin to the SS and have it run.

yep what he said, or local police dept, just tell them you want it run just to see if there is a lein or if it is stolen.

SS has become fairly easy to get a new title after you buy it, bill of sale and vin numbers haven't had a problem

I registered mine w/o a title.
Bill of sale, MC numbers and serial # from the boat was all I needed. Make sure the bill of sale has date, price and sellers name, address and sig.

From the DNR website:

"Transferring Ownership of a Watercraft-

If the watercraft is not titled, simply complete the back of your watercraft registration. If you have lost the registration, then a complete bill of sale with the year, make, hull identification number, registration number (if available), and the names and addresses of the buyer and seller may be used to transfer ownership."
