A cobra
Cobra is one of my favorites, don't know why everyone says they suck. I've had two of them. I guess everyone likes Uniden, since thats the other cheap radio you can pickup anywhere, Then you have the Magnum, Connex, Texas Ranger, and a few other brands where a radio starts at $300.
Not too sure about the guy I talked to today since I already had a good idea of what I wanted, but he was helpful, and had the stuff I wanted, and he is just around the corner from the 76st truck stop if you want to talk to someone. There is also a shop on the other side of Lansing but I have no idea where.
If you search the sight I'm sure you could find what others are running, One of the best setups for an antenna is just a magnet mount on the roof, better than that is a steel whip in a gumdrop mount on the roof, since it has the little to no reflection and the best ground, but height becomes an issue. I am running a 8'2" steel whip on a spring and quick disconnect mounted to a fender, will have to see how it works tomorrow when I get the end soldered on the cable. Best magnet mount in the world is the Wilson 1000, but that will run about $100.

How about those dual antennas that you mount one on each mirror? I see a lot of truckers that have them so I am assuming they work pretty good?

Nope, purely for looks.
If you run two antennas they have to be tuned together, if they arn't then they tend to work against each other Even if you only run one hooked up they reflect and throw of your SWR (Sound wave reflection) so you cant reach as far. Supposedly they are far enough apart on trucks, over 8', and I am pretty sure your burban isnt 8' wide. If you want the look you can get a dummy fiberglass antenna with no wire in it.

I want something that is going to perform good but I do not want a magnetic mount or a 50ft tall whip. The reason I was thinking about the dual mirror mounted antennas is because they are kinda short...I would like something that I can still pull into a parking garage. It is kinda looking like a magnetic mount might be my only option. How do you tune an antenna?

I have mine on a quick disconnect so that even though its around 13' tall it takes half a second to pop it off and toss it in the bed, and it has a spring so trees wont bend it and knock it out of tune.

you tune the wire antennas by how deep they are seated in the base, fiberglass is tuned by trimming the top. and you use a SWR meter to tell how to adjust it. I have one but I find its easier to let a guy at a shop do it.

If you mount an antenna anywhere the top HAS to stick up past the roof or your body will block the signal. Personally on the mirrors Ive had grounding problems but that is different for every vehicle. Although another benefit. of a magnet mount is that you can pull it off the roof and toss it in the back in 2 seconds flat.

Will be out riding with Dalovva. Yes meeting at 10:30 and trying to pull out by 11am at the lastest. Curbdog is bringing dogs for everyone. Can bring a dish to pass to help out. But at least bring drinks for your selves. then be taking trails from Newaygo on up to Baldwin. Again trails are simple 2wd trails more a scenic route until we get to Baldwin where we will get into some heavy stuff you can choose to go in.
