I spent the weekend up north around Wolverine, riding the "tomahawk" MC trail - and in several areas there were trees marked "save".

Looks like the DNR has whored out more state land to be deforested and the resulting erosion will make the trail a sandbox.

again all part of her and obamas plan. I stated it before. Michigan is the test child for obama's brand of socialism and granholm will do whatever she can to make it worse. so that big black can say "look how great the state of michigan is now that it has been converted to government control" we are the guinea pigs.

Wrong. It was planned. My information suggests the grant application has been in place for months. It's one of the many ways to capture more of the federal stimulus funding. Although I wonder how they'll get around the federal requirement that says the money must be used for NEW jobs and can't be used to supplant positions already in place. They'll lay the troopers off for the necessary time period and hire them back under COPS funding or Byrne Grant funding. They'll get 2+ years of "free" trooper money. The problem with that is the local county, city and township police departments will have less grant money available to them to hire new police positions because of the states selfishness.

The primadonna state police organization will once again prevail and everybody will fall for more of the liberal ass, political bullshit that spews out of Lansing and Detroit. Those 100 troopers are being used as political pawns and that is bullshit.

One of the other items slated for drastic cuts in Granholm's executive order cuts an additional 41.2 million dollars in Revenue Sharing to local governments. These funds, which derive from your home towns portion on the return from sales tax, typically is used to fund local police and fire departments. That 41.2 million dollars will translate to the loss of many more local police and fire positions than the meager 100 troopers from the state police. You don't hear much about that though do you?

Fuck Granholm and fukc the state police department. Cut the state police in half and turn it into a highway patrol and put the money saved back into the counties for law enforcement. We will get way more "bang" for our buck AND have more local control of law enforcement.

steveo,
You should have been up at Drummond a couple weekends ago for the signing of some ORV Routes. You would have met a very helpful DNR officer.

I don't knock individual troopers, ever. I have much criticism for your department. It is dysfuntional to the maximum. Why do you have to run your own recruit schools to the tune of 3-4 million dollars per school? You use the same books and receive the same training as the private police academies. Why does the state police department capture federal drug enforcement monies, take their cuts off the top and then leave the crumbs for the locals to apply for THROUGH THE STATE office of drug control policy.

Why does your agency have to own it's own paint color for your cruisers to the tune of $3500 additional per cruiser just so you can have a color that is unique from all the other agencies in the nation/world?

Why does your agency have to have uniform shirts that are unique only to the MSP at a HUGE additional cost to taxpayers including tailoring of said uniforms?

Why does your agency have to have it's own 800 mhz radio system that is already outdated and fucked up (and not capable of data transmission)?

Why does your agency spend more money on your red bubbles on the roofs of your cars than I spend on equipping two cruisers with a more up-to-date and more visible commercial light bar?

Why does your agency still cling to the antiquated notion that it's o.k. to NOT have a cage between you and your prisoners? Why do my guys always have to put YOUR arrests in the back of our cruisers because we're smart enough to have a cage?

You are probably a line trooper and from your avatar probably a member of the SRT. Congrats. I've worked with your crew on many scenes as a former SWAT member. I have been a boss dealing with your bosses for many years. So, take the MSP blue out of your eyes and listen to what I'm saying.

We could probably hire another 100 local officers in this state if YOUR agency simply corrected the minor problems I've outlined above.

I've watched since you've come on board. Let's just not agree to "go there" o.k.? Again, I've got lots of friends who are troopers. I got no beef with any individual trooper. It's the bullshit at the top of your organization that I have a problem with (and lots of them). AND I think it's my mission in life to let people know about them. I generally save that for local officials, citizens, state rep's and state senators.

The rest I agree with you on. Even with the blue in my eyes there is a ton of misspent money on bullsh*t. But I think you'll agree that misspending like that is not specific to the MSP it is a sad truth behind any large police dept.
Your troopers used to wear crossdraw holsters until the department went with the Sig P226 9mm in the early 90's. That "tradition" changed and unlike some of the others I've outlined, DIDN'T cost huge amounts of money. I think you should be proud of the tradition of SERVICE and not the color of your cruisers or uniform shirts. The tradition of SERVICE I will agree with you on.

But your agency's "separatism" policy creates a primadonna organization that the rest of the cops in this state resent.

Again, those 100 troopers and their families (several of whom I've met and one of whom I know well) are being used as political pawns and YOUR bosses in Lansing are part and parcel of that political game.
