Default tire balancing

Just called Belle tire and they want 12.99 a tire to balance 30's.
I have a tire machine so I mount up all my tires but I need to balance a set and don't want to drop 50 bucks. Anyone have a balancer or know a cheap place in Livonia?

My sggestion is to find a small ma and pa store. I got quotes of $100-$115 to have 8 235/75R15's dismounted and 4 of them remounted and balanced. I called a small service center here in Fowlerville and got them done for $54 out the door. That is quite a bit more work for not much more money than you were quoted.

Walmart
Sounds stupid, but they do a descent job and they are the cheapest I've found hands down. Probably run you about $25-30.

At our shop it's $10 for balancing no matter what the size! I'm way far away though.

Just got some tires balanced at WalMart with lifetime balancing-- anyone know what kind of records they keep to know what the "lifetime" is? Do they know what kind of tires you got the lifetime balance for? I have a set of winter tires I never balanced since they rode so good without it- might work...?

Default consumer rape is rampant!

labor cost for tires "when you dont buy their tires" has went thru the roof lately, and it doesnt matter car or truck. I was quoted over $32 to mount and balance a small 18" car tire (one tire)
you can allways bust one bead and do the air soft pellet trick.
I have never done it but people on the internet swear by it.

So you want to tie up a $6k balancer for 20 minutes and pay $15 have four tires done? 7-10 bucks a tire is resonable considering the overhead involved.

There is a economic stimulus rebate you can apply for from Obama to get tires balanced. up to $1,500 per year . I would look into it. I think its form 1097-Tire

If they charge 5 bucks a tire to balance, then I don't think it's unreasonable to get my tires balanced there. I watched them yesterday, they all rotate in on the tire machine and balancer, it's not really tied up for 20 min.

But you are correct, 15 bucks is a hell of a deal for the work involved and the equipment used.

You have to look at the big picture and the number of people involved. Time with the service manager, then a tech or tire buster gets involved, time to pull the car in and set it up, time to pull the wheels off the car, time to balance, time to put the wheels back on the car, time for a Tech to recheck torque after the tire buster puts the wheels back on, time to pull the car out of the shop.

As a former repair shop owner I tend to look at the big picture. The places offering the cheap tire balancing are doing something called a "loss leader". They want to entice you into a cheap service in hopes that yuo will buy something that has a good profit margin to cover the loss of the cheaper deal.

absolutely, I agree they are not making money on balancing-- but I figure that for all the hurt WalMart is putting on US businesses by bullying their purchase prices to rediculous levels to the point where many or most businesses can't even make a profit on the good they supply, I can feel ok about taking advantage of their low cost balancing.

Ideally I would like a balancer in my garage so I can bypass ALL shops entirely. Of course I would offer the greatlakes4x discount to members... Having other people work on my junk makes me nervous. At least if I fubar a job I have only myself to blame.
