Default 7.5 to 8.8 swap

how hard is it to go from a 7.5 to a ranger 28 spline 8.8? what would have to be done to the drive flange and u joint plate? finally, will the 7.5 shafts fit in the 28 spline 8.8? they are the same spline and diameter i believe. all the brackets should line up?

The 8.8 out of another ranger should bolt right in, The shafts are also the same.
You will not have to change anything, I took an 8.8 out of a 94 and bolted it right in to my 97 with no problems. I also had the 7.5" axle before.

The parking brake cables are also the same.

The axles are different on the 92 and older rangers, they aren't as wide.

well imswapping itonto a 89 bronco II. so i would want the narrower axle? whatsthe diference in width? so a 92 axle would be the narow one?

in my opinion i wouldn't wast time swapping in a 28 spline 8.8, it's just not much of an upgrade.

Go strait to a 31 spline from an explorer, it's a little harder swap, but still very easy.

you won't notice the width difference

well i would do the swap more for either a cheap gear down or for a limited slip unit.

IF BOTH AXLES ARE THE SAME WIDTH ARE THE SHAFTS INTERCHANGEABLE?

IF they were the same width, I believe so, but they're probably not.

8.8's from (IIRC) 93+ are wider by 1.5" or something like that.

But if you upgrade to an 8.8 with the small shafts, it's almost a downgrade. there only an increase in strength in the R&P, so unless yo're going through pinions and ring gears, thats pretty pointless. And it will greatly reduce the ground clearance, the 8.8 is surprisingly larger than the 7.5"

Though 8.8" from a GenI or GenII I think are the same size.

i read on TRS a lot. i know the 28 spline 8.8 isnt any stronger. the upgrade would be in the LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL and possibally 4.10 GEARS and maybe even a DIFF COVER. that i cold transfer over to a 31 spline 8.8 later. im really asking a few specific questions.

1. How hard will the swap be?
2. What if any thing needs to be swapped out to make the different axle work?
3. will the axle shafts from an 89 BII 7.5 fit into a 92 ranger 8.8, both are 28 SPLINES?

I have a set of 28 spline 8.8 shaft if you need a set, you could have them on the cheap.

thanks, i might take you up on that but im not 100% sure what im doing right now. a friend of mine has a 4.10 31 spline 8.8, but it needs brakes. another friend has a 3.73 trac-lok 7.5. the upgrade there would be the limited slip unit. and i might go with a 28 spline just depends. i think im leaning toward the 7.5 since my deal on a 28 spline 8.8 fell through. id be able to save a lot of money since i would have an entire second axle for parts. im really thinking about swapping up to a dana 35 too.
