Default 4.0 Swap?

If i swap in a 4 liter for my 2.9 do i have to change the transmission? I have heard both ways and dont trust either source so i figured i'd ask here.

the 2.9 and the 4.0 share the same bell housings, but any 5 speed other then the m50rd won't live long behind a 4.0L. The A4LD will interchange. IF you already have the m5ord with the 2.9L then you'll want to get a 4.0L clutch as its bigger and stronger then the 2.9L clutch.

I have done several 4.0L swaps.

The 2.9L and the 4.0L for all intents and purpose are the same block. Ford bored and stroked it to maximize the displacement for that block. The only major change is when they switched it from a pushrod V6 to a SOHC V6.

Is your current 2.9L Carbed or EFI? If it is carbed, switch the intakes and distributor and you are ready to go. If it is EFI, its best to get a newer automatic with wire harness and computer. The 4.0 uses coil packs and sensor instead of traditional Coil and distributor.
