Default Hey, Kayak guys...

Ever hear of Pelican Kayaks?

I was looking at this one either in a 12' or 14' length.

They look like they'd prolly track okay on lakes, anyone ever paddle one?

I'm actually thinking about two of these ,but the pelican is pretty cheap. I like the seats and the drywells in the Old Towns better, but the pursuits were @200 less than the best price I can find on the Dirgo. My family has always had good luck with Old Town, and I know they are made better, but...

I'm kinda digging it. It uses the old style hatch covers.

Jason, if you don't mind, can I hijack?

What are peoples thoughts on sit on top kayaks? I was looking at Pelicans at the local sporting goods place and they had some that looked nice and I could through my scuba stuff on and dive off it. Are those kayaks worth a damn?

I'm digging it, too, price-wise, but I actually like the newer old town ones a ton.

They're gay.

Mike Sova has one; 'nuff said.

IMHO, they are pretty easy to paddle and more forgiving/stable. The tradeoff is they're not as "nimble" as a narrower boat, but a narrower boat isn't that nimble to begin with.

i am happy with my wilderness systems pamlico 10' i have paddled a pelican 10' it was a little different style too and it did not track as well as my pamlico. i would imagine that the longer boat would though

i have a 12'-0" montrose and like it alot. my gf has the 10'-6" old town. both of ours have dry storage. it's a good thing too. i would look for comfort in the kayak over appearance. if it's comfortable, it will run smooth. my gf's old town is a bit too small for me. i'm 6'-2" 180. get a good paddle too.

SC Johnson owns Ocean, Necky and Old Town. I used to get a really good deal on them seeing I work for them but they cut back on the discount some now. With shipping it isn't much cheaper for me to go to Dunhams, Dicks, etc.

hey now! Mine isn't your average SOT, it's a 17' touring style, so it's slightly quicker than your average 12' fishing boat.

I like both styles, personally. :)

ps pelican boats/coleman suck. They are really cheaply made. My wife :) picked up her mainstream streak for 199 last year at MC Sports. gotta watch for the sales or go used to get a good deal. I will never buy a new boat again, unless I strike it rich. craigslist baby!
