Default Difference Between Democrats & Republicans

I think I've found a real life democrat / republican discriminator that works.

I live on Grosse Ile, where two bridges cross the Trenon Channel to connect the island to the mainland. Nobody moves to the island not understanding it's an island - seperated from the mainland by 400+ yards of navigable waterway.

One bridge is owned, operated, and "maintained" by Wayne county (with all that implies). The other bridge is owned, operated, and maintained by a family-owned business - who charge a $1.25 toll to cross. You can get a "BridgePass" that gives you discounted crossings without interacting with the toll booth.

It was necessary to close the county bridge for over 12 hours yesterday for much-needed repairs. In fact, this winter it will close for several months for more involved repairs to the actuator mechanism and replacement of the bridge deck.

With all of the late afternoon "rush hour" traffic concentrated on the toll bridge, traffic was backed up about 1/2 mile in both directions coming onto the island.

Several of my neighbors reacted to this with great agitation - Smoke (the owner of the toll bridge) is an a$$hole - he shouldn't be charging a toll when there's no other choice!! There should be a law where he has to make the toll free when the county bridge closes! Making money off this soesn't seem legal!! Somebody said he made an extra $50K! (not likely - if every man, woman, and child in the township crossed over twice, each in a seperate vehicle, that would only be $25K). etc.....

Others (like me) found it inconvenient, and a poor omen of things to come when the county bridge is closed for repairs, but I don't begrude the bridge owners their tolls. They didn't raise their price to profiteer off of the county bridge closure, and they put extra people on to handle the volume.

When a boat hit the toll bridge and damaged it, closing it for a year - nobody gave the bridge company any money to make up for their loss.

Invariably, everyone eho bitched about the bridge company making money off of this situation also professed to be or in one case "liberal independent". Likewise, professed didn't take issue with the toll bridge making a few bucks - even if the wait sucked.

Interesting.

Is then becomes a Roe vs. Wade controversy ...if the water is deep I'd suggest roe to be the preferred method.

Moral to story : don't buy a house with limited access.

Not exactly. Did a casual poll at the local cafe (wasn't going back across the bridge that night for anything), and at work, giving me a population of about 20. It's not a statistically sound sample by any means, but the 100% accuracy is uncanny.

Not slamming anyone, just found it interesting the group was split so cleanly. Trust me - it's not easy finding / liberal independents / liberals on Grosse Ile.

To make it even worse, at least two of the professed / liberal independents / liberals use the toll bridge on a daily basis, but only complained when they don't have a choice (i.e. when I choose to pay $1.25 it's OK, but when I have no choice, it's wrong).

did you ask any of the complaining liberal if owning a bridge is such a care free easy racket to get into why dont they each built there own bridge and become millionaires overnight?

Thats the way business works right .... its super easy to make money, you just wait for the tax subsidized whatever to fail then swoop in for the kill muuuu haa haa ha haa *dr. evil laugh*

i heard building a bridge is reall easy and cheap to maintain. You dont need architec or any permits insurance, plus steel is pretty cheap these days. Not to mention river front property on grosse ilse has got to be close to a million for a couple hundred feet of frontange.

Duff man see if i can go in on a bridge with you, with my lottery money i will stop buyin lottery tickets and just buy a bridge instead :miff:

Ohh duffman please ask these residents how many of them would like to own a business that competes with a public funded "company" i.e. ZERO regards for costs, and zero interest in profitablility, only objective is jobs. Also much to cmu jeepers dismay the publicly funded bridge i am willing to bet costs atleast 25 % more per vehicle than the privately operated bridge (thats minimum 300 % more would not surprise me one bit) . The liberals on the island never think that way, anything the gov't does is "FREE" WOOOO HOOO paying 25% extra, or more is great if they tell me its free. Yeah for . Down with free enterprise

Why isn't that toll bridge owner thinking of society before himself!!!

My step-mom is a democrat and she has always taught me that you should do everything for the benifit of society...well...unless it is an inconvenience...then you should do whatever you want to do...and complain that what you were going to do for society isn't being done by someone else...

If I were him I would close the toll bridge 24 hours after the county bridge is closed for repairs.

I would not do it out of spite. I would do it to prove helping society is not his concern.

Oh! Ayn Rand strikes again!!!

"I swear by my Life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man,
nor ask another man to live for the sake of mine. "

hahahahha

If the dude shuts down his bridge, he sure is proving a major point...k.

He's also not getting any cash, and, if you really think about it, he's also losing out on the extra money he could be making while people are being forced to use his bridge.

If he would have raised the prices, I could see how some people could complain. (I, personally, think he could do whatever he wanted, seeing as how it is HIS bridge)

But he kept the prices the same, which makes him a nice guy. He still has to do the maintenance (probably moreso because of the additional traffic) so he still needs the $$$$.

To shut the bridge down is :gay: ghey :gay:. He's not making any cash at all! He is losing $$$ big time, and he might lose the support of the people that did use him before. (I could see how some would have the mentality that you have and say "more power to him", but I could also see many, many people who need to get to work and have no way to get there...when the other bridge opens up, I could see people even willing to avoid his bridge when it's open because he was such an arsehole).

Hence the name of the book Atlas Shrugged.:tonka:

His is his own small scale Atlas.

I had also hoped Bill Gates would have packed up, bought is own island and moved Microsoft and all its employees out of the US when the government went after him.
