Default My CJ build...

Welp, picked up this '81 CJ5. Its got the 4.2, 4 speed, Dana 30 combo with D30/Model 20 axles. Wasn't sure how bad off the tub was, but pretty much just thought of it as a donor rig from the start.

Here's the purchase:

Starting to tear into it, it was obvious that it had seen several poor attempts with everything used under the son (even roofing paper it seems) at body repair over its life span. The more I tore into it, the worse it was. First thought was just the common repair panels and it would be all set. Well luck didn't have that. This is how she sits now.

So still need to finish tear down, then its on to the build up stages. Plan on mostly a tube Jeep, on 35's. Keeping the grille, hood, and cowl pretty much rest will be built.

Yup thats the game plan. Looking on going as far as building the chassis from 2x4 3/16" tube for a platform.

Here's one of the reasons for the new frame...

Almost have all of the old tub off.

Some of the killer body work...

Not much for an update, just more disassembly. Hoping to get some steel to start on the new frame this weekend.

Not much to update with now. Still doing tear down and clean up. After the holidays new frame construction will begin. Will give me time to decide if I want to stick with the 95" wheel base or go to 100". Remember it will be on 35" tires.

Also am picking up some weld on beadlocks for the 15" wheels. Going to run 35" rubber, but can't decide what to run for tires.

Wow how things change, CJ is going to be a YJ now...

Here's whats left from the CJ5...

Trans/transfer case is gone. In its place will be a TF999 auto. So I am using the engine in this pic.

Stock axles are for sale. You can see the Dana 60 thats going under the YJ. Front is being picked up later this weekend, as is a YJ frame. Also picked up a Ramsey 8k winch for the front.

The salvageable body work is all for sale now, as I found a complete YJ body to use.

Yeah... so only CJ5 parts I am keeping are the column, engine, and a few little misc items. Needless to say, buying the CJ5 was not the way to go.

But I can say now, new direction is...
-YJ body and frame (Comp cut tub, tube fenders)
-XJ rear leaf conversion for another 6" of wheelbase
-4.2 I6 on Propane, TF999 trans, NP231 with SYE for now
-37" Iroc's or 38" TSL SX's on steel beadlocks
-HP D44/ D60 axle combo, full width. 4:10 gears. (Not sure which lockers yet)
-8K winch with synthetic line. Want to do a second winch in the rear.
-Full cage and suspension seats
-Hydro steering (?)

Plan is to still be able to run a full top/doors for winter or wet wheeling. HP D44 will be upgraded to a HP D60 when I have the $$ and come across one.

Still getting parts together so I can start the build end of Jan. Goal is to have it going by opening weekend at the Mounds.

Big thanks to PavementPounder and everyone else for the hook ups on parts, advise, etc. You have cost me more $$ then I ever imagined
