Default You know how everybody is saying 90% of the drug war guns are from the usa?

well, since people just took hillary clinton's word as fact, everybody kept repeating it.

well, fox news decided to look into it.

THIS is the OFFICIAL statement of an ATF special agent (Statement of William Newell, Special Agent in Charge, Phoenix Field Division, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Before the United States House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations, Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies March 24, 2009.

Copy and pasted from ATF website: http://www.atf.gov/press/speech/2009...-testimony.htm ).

This statement has been bastardized, in an effort to advance their gun-ban agenda, by anti-gun organizations like the Brady Campaign (formerly, Handgun CONTROL), anti-gun politicians and officials like Hillary Clinton and Eric Holder, and anti-gun liberal media outlets like MSNBC. Unfortunately, even more professional media outlets, talking heads, and the like, are regurgitating the bastardized version of the original statement.

The version being pushed (erroneously or purposefully) now is (just one of MANY examples), "On Thursday, Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano visit Mexico to discuss ways to stop the smuggling of American weapons, which Mexico says account for 90% of confiscated arms here. The meeting is part of an urgent American effort to aid Mexico as it fights a bloody war against drug cartels".

There is a VAST difference between the perhaps, "factual' statement that 90% of guns recovered in Mexico AND which were SUCCESSFULLY TRACED, came from the U.S., and the bastardized statement that 90% of guns confiscated in Mexico are from the U.S.

The latter is an outright FABRICATION designed to further an anti-gun agenda

But they do come from the U.S., the U.S. Government!!!

http://www.examiner.com/x-1417-Gun-R...exican-cartels

US government arms exports to Latin America and Mexican drug cartel violence
News reports and anti-violence organizations suggest that the US civilian firearms market is flooding Mexico with the weapons used by drug cartels and black marketeers to perpetrate violence. These firearms, we are told, are being purchased at gun shops and gun shows in the United States, and smuggled across the border into Mexico. Indeed, we are told that 90% of the firearms seized by the Mexican government and traced by the BATFE are found to have originated in the United States. Senator John Kerry recently told the Boston Globe that 1 of 4 weapons seized by the Mexican government are made available for tracing. Senator Kerry made this statement while he urged renewal of a federal US law banning civilian possession of “assault weapons” (various non-military semi-automatic firearms).
However, we are learning that many arms in the hands of Mexican drug cartels are military-grade automatic weapons, and that the numbers of cartel arms sourcing from the US civilian market are highly exaggerated.
What is being ignored is the fact that the United States government (via Departments of Defense and State) sells thousands of military and non-military firearms to foreign governments, including Mexico and Central and South American countries. The Small Arms Survey (SAS; Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva 2006; linked below) is highly informative.
http://www.smallarmssurvey.org/files/sas/publications/o_papers_pdf/2006-op19-US.pdf
The table below, compiled from the SAS, lists Latin American countries and the number of military rifles and machine guns, as well as non-military weapons, that the US government has sold to those nations during the 5-year period of 1998-2003.

I was listening to NPR yesterday and they had some soundbites from a Mexican official that was disgusted that the USA was not going to change our second amendment rights to stop the flow of weapons into mexico.

He is squarely putting the blame on you and me for supplying drug cartels with weapons.

Just me, but I think sending them money is useless until they do something about the political/military corruption.

Militarize and close the border, it will be like a self cleaning oven. Open the door when done.
