The axle shafts are at C&M Performance Machine getting black oxide coated so they dont rust. I was tossing the idea of powder coating, spray bombing, zinc or some other form of coating or black oxide. The black oxide coating seems like the best choice considering paint would have a limited life with the flexing the shafts will do. I'll post up a picture once I get them back, they should look pretty cool.

I've never been super happy with the choice of transmissions I made. I had tunnel vision while doing the initial parts selection and didnt think anything but "crawling comps" where you dont really need any gear but first and nothing else matters.

I've given a 4L60 thought but to handle the hp the engine will have it'll take about a grand in extra parts to make it live and it should be build from a 4L70 just so it has stronger planetaries and a main shaft. The other issue is that a 4L60 type of trans lends itself to the 4 speed atlas very easily and provides a super compact package. The only down side is that it takes a very significant initial investment for the upgraded trans parts, initial trans cost of nearly a grand for the 70 and then the 4 speed t-case. it really is probably the best and most adaptable setup out there for auto's.

Then I thought a 4L80 would be a better choice but that with only a 2 speed case would end up 1.5" longer than my current setup with the th400 but I cant afford to give up any length.

Then I started playing with the idea of a 6L80 since I'll be using an 08 corvette engine controller and that trans came behind it. It's entirely possible to get working but the tap shift feature wasnt quite figured out yet. I've done a couple weeks of research and figured out exactly what's needed and it's entirely do-able with the right abilities and controllers. The entire package will be no more than 1/2" longer than the current th400 and 2 speed and if I make my own adapter, it can be shorter than the current setup with 2x the gears.

I hate making changes this late in the build but it needed to be done. I know I wouldnt be happy with the th400 the way it was and I didnt want to put much work into making changes to it when I really just needed to get an electronic trans from the beginning. I figure I either do it now and redo a few things or I do it in a year and redo a LOT of things and spend money over again.

I just hope it fits without having to redo the drivetrain mounts. The cradle is tight around the th400 and I'm not sure how much extra room there will be to drop it in place without moving things around. I should know in a week or two.
