911 is this an emergency?

Yes, my mother in law is in the hospital and going to die in the next 10 minutes. I am going to get there as fast as I can this is the description of my car.

We will have police give you an escort Mr. Football player.

One call to 911 would have helped.

Pro football players deserve special treatment. They are exempt from all laws when they have their hazard flashers on.

Try that in michigan. When pulled over, everyone get out of the car and disobey every instruction given to you.

Plus he was black, so it must have been racist.

From the cops perspective you have no idea what is going on, you don't know who is in the car or why, you can only assume it may be an emergency. I think that the situation could have been handled better if the player stopped immediately upon the officer turning on his lights and explaining the situation. Instead by running from the law to the hospital he created a situation where the officer did not know what to expect or why someone was running from him.

I have sped twice to get my son to the hospital, if I was to pass the law and he turned his lights on I would stop immediately and explain my situation. I would calmly explain to him why i was speeding/running red lights, etc. I think in most cases if handled that way, most cops would either escort you to the hospital or let you go. Maybe I am wrong.

With that said, I think the officer could have taken everyones ID's in the parking lot, and allowed them to go up to the hospital room, then taken them to the front desk with the ID's and a ticket if he so chose to write one.

In the heat of the moment it is hard to say how you would really handle the situation from either side.

^That's the key right there^

You hit the gas when a cop turns his lights on, expect to go to jail. End of story.

Had he stopped, he may have gotten a police escort the rest of the way.

Let's turn this around.

What should happen if a person is speeding to the hospital to see a loved one, and crashes and kills another person? Then what?

If a cop sees a person speeding or driving recklessly, he should stop them. End of story. If there's a legit reason, then there should be an escort, and it should be at the discrection of the cop.

Look, it's sad that he didn't see his relative before they died. But I'm not willing to bet my life or the lives of the ones I live so that you can speed and endanger my life for yours.

I might agree with you IF he was speeding or driving recklessly, He stoped checked for traffic and went, There is no question the cop knew exactly what was happening in the first 10 seconds after the stop, What would you think if you were following someone with their flashers on going to the hospital? What did he think the women were not a threat and just let them go?

The person dying was already at the hospital, under medical care.
There was no emergency or situation other than the one created by people who did not want to obey the lawful instructions.

The poor cop will have his career ruin by some over-paid, under-work football player.

When someone you love is laying in their death bed about to expire and you have one last chance to say good bye, Then you tell me it's not an emergency, The cop being nothing less than an asshole and showing no compassion for human life ruined his own career, No one else.

If it was bad enough to speed(and im not talkind 5 or 10 over) then you should have called an ambulance, If you feel that you need to hall ass to get someone to the hospital and put everyone else on the road at risk, then you should have called an ambulance. I know you willl totally disagree with me, since you are the best driver in the world, and can do 130 in the snow with you son in the car and he is safe.

Not long ago an officer for Oak Park was shot to death after showing compassion.
Yeah, I'll tell you that is not an emergency.
An emergency is when life or property is at risk. He was just "butt-hurt" he didn't get special treatment.

I guess it would depend on the circumstances and the severity of the emergency.

I've never been in the situation of rushing to see a loved ones last breath's.

I don't see why it would be so hard to stop and explain to a police officer why you are in such a rush.

I think most policeman would be compassionate enough to let you on your way as I mentioned before. If he was not compassionate enough to let me on my way I am not sure how I would react, at that point I might not be so calm and may take off....I don't know.

I live within a 10 minute drive of the hospital, speeding beyond 10 mph over isn't going to net me but an extra minute or two...I'm probably a better driver then you, but that wasn't the argument.

I find it interesting that they made such a big deal about the guy being an NFL running back Does that mean that it would have been acceptable if it was just some other joe blow

I see disorderly conduct as well as failure to stop and multiple traffic violations. He should be in jail.

It looked like he was starting to square off.

One of the hardest things in law enforcement is finding the off switch. Especially after a pursuit, bad stop, yelling people.
