Default Skunk Spray

What's the best way to get it off a dog?

I've been googling for an hour and it seems the ol tomato juice doesn't really work.

I saw a few mentions about possible off the shelf products from pet stores and there were even a couple of recipes for homemade concoctions using peroxide, but Iím worried about it being harsh on my dogs skin/coat.

Any good ideas or personal experience?

Iíll be wearing lots of layers and rubber gloves so Iím not the smelly guy at the office tomorrow

We got a bottle of the stuff they sell at the pet stores, but have not used it. (we take it when we go camping as last time we had our dog get into a skunk and nothing was available locally).

Not sure how well it works though.

I'm definatly not running to Dundee, my wife is flipping out and gaging as we speak and the dog is still outside.

well good luck, when the skunk sprayed lilly a few months back the whole house smelled like it for about 2 weeks and we never even let her inside. Tried the tomato thing but didnt work maybe you will have better luck with it. If it dont work i think it was only 8 or 9 bucks

recipe of one pint of hydrogen peroxide, one small box of baking soda, and a couple of squirts of any dish washing liquid mixed in a gallon of water makes an effective antidote

take the dog to the groomer and make it someone else's problem. We tried tomato, the dog stuff from petsmart, mouthwash and vinegar. We ended up with dogs that smelled like skunk plus a bunch of other crap. We took them to the groomers and they came home smelling like baby powder.

peroxidemix, lestoil, i've had good luck with dawn and fabric softener mix any grease and oil remover. the skunk spray is an oil, if you use anything that doesn't cut it all it is going to do is smear it around and make the dog stink worse. if you put tomato juice on the dog it will smell like a tomato skunk and make a mess.

as for getting it out of the house boiling vinegar works awesome.

I think i'm going to try the peroxide mix when i get home.

I'm not taking her anywhere in any car that we own, and so far the house isn't tainted...i don't believe.

The peroxide is the least of your concerns. We keep those ingredients on hand at all times in the event of a skunking. With 7 dogs, it is bound to happen and nothing works better than the peroxide stuff. Tomato juice is useless. You will just have a dog that smells like skunk and is covered in tomato juice.

Or spend $8 for the ingredients and save yourself $100+ vet bills...
