Default Public land and shooting

For years I was able to shoot my .22 in my back yard...then they built a sub division in the fields behind my house. I then began to shoot at my friends house...which I just learned hes not going to be owning anymore in august.

What are the laws concerning target shooting with low powered firearms on public land....and does anyone know of any land in monroe county? I know about the preserve on the lake erie shoreline, but dont know the rules out there.

Im not talking about taking out my .308 or my .223, just my little .22LR for some tin can shoots without having to drive the 30 minutes to the indoor range and pay $13/hr.

just buy yourself a box of cb longs. a little slower but almost silent. as far as the rules go, the michigan dnr site usually has maps of the different zones throughout the state.

EDIT: Ive been looking at the DNR's website and reading the rules on the Port Aux Peaux site. In the "general rules" it states nothing against discharging firearms or target shooting, only in the "in designated campgrounds" does it say discharging firearms is not permitted.

But I could have sworn I saw a paper sign on a stick near the north entrance to the Erie State Game area that said "no target shooting" in the fall during hunting season. I dont know if that was temporary for the hunting season, or if thats a new rule and they havent put in a permanent sign for it yet.

I cant. I have a GSG-5. It needs high velocity .22LR for it to cycle properly.

Oh god Id LOVE to. But Im broke right now, and probably couldnt afford the membership if I got accepted. If I wasnt broke, Id probably already have an annual membership at top gun in taylor.

Do you know what the dues are?

I tried to get into the dundee club when I was 19, but they pretty much told me to "get the hell out of here kid."

What are the dues and hoops you need to jump through to get into one? Other than 04PSD...I know of no one in a club. Top Gun in taylor wants $280/ year...and to be honest, I really dont like indoor ranges at all.

wow!!! the dues here at only 30 a year and the only thing they ask is to help with clean up in the spring and fall but they do a big dinner for you also in the winter of all types of wild game. The food and soda is a little on the high side but it's worth the price.

I may have to take you up on that offer later this spring or summer when I can get the spare money to do it. What all do you/ I need to do to have me become a member? I really am very interested.

Ok.....the site I was talking about in one of my earlier posts about there being a no target shooting sign...that was the Point Mouillee state game area. And target shooting of any kind (even bow or slingshot) IS NOT permitted there at all year round.

But I am still unsure of the Petersburg, Point Aux Peaux, or Erie game areas. I read the rules and regulations attached to the official maps on the DNR site, and there is no specific rule against target shooting except within designated camping sites. Anyone have any personal experience with those areas? The last thing I want is to be in trouble with the DNR over a firearms offense.

.....man I dont want to have to call the DNR office.... looks like I might have to to get a definite answer out of the legal babel on their site.

as for the shooting rules in or near your home. the only one I ever heard that really applies is the distance from a house or dwelling rule. its 450 feet from any house , dwelling or building you don't own. it also applies to being near a highway like 275 or 94.

For Monroe County Rod & Gun, you don't have to live in Monroe County.

You apply for membership, pay initiation ($100? it's been 12 years for me) and you can use facilities while waiting for full membership (i.e. vote and buy beer). Then membership is $120/year.

It's a great deal and a great facility. MUCH better than a crowded, indoor facility like Top Gun, which I'm sure doesn't have a 100 yard range (building ain't that big).

I've not been able to find any rules other than the one Yetti mentioned. Everybody seems to shoot at a public land spot on this side of the state near me that has a nice burm in the back. Although I have to say. Some people are going to ruin it for everybody by not cleaning up after themselves. Every time I go out there I have to pick up milk jugs and spent shotgun shells that some PIGS leave behind. I truly loath that few.

Monroe's Rod and gun club initiation fee is $120 and you have to put down a deposit for one year of dues at the same time (also $120). So bring $240 when you want to sign up. I just did it last weekend.

Two sponsors, but you can easily find someone at the bar that day to be a 2nd sponsor.
