Post Three Wheeler Regulations and Laws

I have two Yamaha three wheelers and im thinking about purchasing another, larger one.
The guy says he rides on the trails but im not sure how legal it is.

If anyone knows the official laws for orv trail riding for three wheelers let me know.

Thanks.

Three wheels is a bad deal in this state.
1. you have to be 16 or older to ride one even if its like a honda 70cc

2. the trails that are 50" and wider or scramble areas are the only legal place to ride.

3. the new road shoulder access laws Exclude 3 wheelers in the language. so its still illegal to ride on the road shoulders even in the U.P. by law.

Why can you not take them on the standard quad trails like a 4 wheeler?

3 wheelers are legal on 50" trails for quads & bikes, and 72" routes. aside from that scramble areas like St Helens or the mounds, silver lake ,etc.. totally legal. the biggest issue has been young riders. the state hates 3 wheelers as does the www.cpsc.gov

It's been a while since I read the laws but I believe they are considered ATVs and fall into the same class as a 4wheeler.

Yetti,

Your right that no youth under the age of 16 can operate any 3 wheeler, but your confusing some when you say in your opening post that 3 wheelers can only operate on 50 inch or wider and Scramble area's..'

'As long as the WIDTH of the 3 wheeler is under 50 inches in width, it is COMPLETELY legal to operate on a trail marked with the ATV insignia [50 inches or less ] but not legal on a 24inch ''cycle only'' trail..

I reread this post a couple times and can't find anything that was wrong with it the first time? as for 3 wheelers Being wider then 50" I have yet to see one aside from street machines?

#2 was the confusing one, even jeepfreak81 got a little confused.. I think when you said the trails that are 50 inches and wider, is what confused him/me..I think we took it as --------the trail you ride MUST be 50 inches or wider to operate a 3-wheeler on it.

Maybe its just the way WE interpeted it---im not right all the time either.

I mis-took your comment as saying that in order for the three wheeler to be legal on a trail, that the trail has to be wider than 50 inches, which I now understand that you did'nt mean it that way.

As long as the 3-wheeler is under 50 inches in width, it may operate on a trail designed for ORV/ATV use for vehicles UNDER 50 inches wide, and all stock 3 wheelers are under 50 inches wide.
