Default For immediate realease UFWDA

Date: Mar 27 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

United Four Wheel Drive Associations (UFWDA): We Are Not Them.

Beaverton, OR -- March 27, 2009 – United Four Wheel Drive Associations (UFWDA) is stunned in response to the illegal and drunken display by 39 people over the past two weekends in the Jefferson National Forest located near Blacksburg, Virginia.

The association is appalled by the actions of these alleged trespassers and objects to describing them as “off-road enthusiasts.” It is the position of UFWDA that these are not off-road enthusiasts.

The more than 30-year old United Four Wheel Drive Associations is dedicated to responsible recreation, educating 4-wheel drive owners about the proper use of their vehicles off-road and conserving public lands for use by all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts.

“UFWDA’s volunteer trail patrol has been successfully implemented to discourage just this type of behavior by any user of public land, regardless of the recreation, by utilizing responsible recreationists to serve as the eyes and ears of law enforcement to deter and report inappropriate or illegal behavior” says Wayne Groom, president.

UFWDA Member Associations across the U.S. Coordinate Skilled and Dedicated Trail Clean-Up

Member associations across the U.S. sponsor trail clean up events throughout the year, often in conjunction with the U.S. Forest Service. UFWDA is happy to report that member association, Virginia Four Wheel Drive Association (VA4WDA) based in Richmond, Virginia, plans a trail clean-up weekend in George Washington National Forest, north of Jefferson.

“As off-road enthusiasts, we take care of where we go off-roading, we respect the land and manage it properly,” says VA4WDA land use coordinator and volunteer trail patrol captain Gregg Jackson.

In fulfillment of its mission and in response to the devastation experienced in Virginia, UFWDA is reaching out to the Jefferson National Forest to provide a number of skilled volunteers and heavy equipment experts to the U.S. Forest Service, Eastern Divide Ranger District, to deal with this disturbance and help repair damage.

Jackson, with decades of experience in four-wheeling goes on to say, “We educate members to adhere to the Tread Lightly! recreation ethic, and we work with the U.S. Forest Service and communities where we have land to off-road. At this time the VA4WDA has an Earth Day trail clean-up scheduled with the north river district of George Washington National Forest for April 18th and 19th, 2009.”

I have not found the source that prompted the press release. However I suspect it was a "damage control" situation that promulgated the response.
