Default Check Your Lugnuts.

Hudsonville, MI (WZZM) - When a front wheel fell off his jeep on I-196 near Hudsonville Iraq war veteran Chad Pomeroy says his military training took over.

"Rattles you a little bit but I was in Iraq for a year," says Pomeroy. " We drove truck in Iraq and they teach us defensive driving so it kind of kicks in. It's second nature."

Pomeroy was driving his 6 month old daughter home to Byron Center when he lost a wheel while merging onto I-196.

"My jeep started shaking a little bit and all of a sudden the driver's side front tire flew off and hit a car on the opposite side of traffic," he says.

53 year old "Nacho" Esparza and his Carla wife watched helplessly as the tire bounced down the highway toward their car.

"We saw it coming but we couldn't avoid it because there was a car next to us," explains Mrs. Esparza. "It just hit us right head on and the airbags deployed It happened really quick."

"Nacho" Esparza got his car got safely off the highway and then went to the hospital after feeling chest pains and shortness of breath.

"He's not doing too good," says his wife. "Going down the highway and all of a sudden a tire comes up and hits you is going to scare you," says Pomeroy.

Pomeroy say he was also afraid, mostly for his 6 month old daughter sleeping in her car seat. As soon as he wrestled his 3 wheeled jeep to the side of the road he say she reached for her.

"Yea it was scary," says Pomeroy. "When I got off the road she is the first thing I checked to make sure she was OK. She was sleeping."

The deputies and the tow truck drivers dispatched to the scene couldn't think of another accident where a tire fell off a vehicle and hit another car.

"Unusual occurrence," says Doug Zwak of Hudsonville Towing Company. "I've never had one of these where it falls off and hits another car. This is the first time I've seen something like this."

"Just one of those things that happen, says Pomeroy. "Once in a lifetime thing."

The driver of the jeep says he had the front tires changed about a month ago.

He guesses the lug nuts weren't tightened and were slowly unscrewing until finally they broke loose.

Ummm, every time I've bought tires they told me to check the lug nuts after a hundred miles or so...

Apparently the military teaches you how to drive on 3 wheels but not how to make sure all 4 stay on the vehicle.

This one happened in front of me in Carson City, Nv.
We look a lugnut off each wheel and sent her on her way in fifteen minutes.

Another reason to carry two bottle jacks!!

I've only seen this happen a couple of times and both times some of the wheel studs had snapped off.

my guess was that he had aluminum rims. re tightening them after 50-100 miles is critical.

Hers was pretty funny. Traffic was only 30 mph and I see this wheel rolling down the road. WTF!!!
Then I saw what happened. She was freaked out, thought her jeep was fawked.

That happened to me. It was fun, well not really. And it took for ever to find my tire because it flew into the woods

Had this happen to someone I know a few years back, except their front rim shattered at 75mph while pulling a small enclosed trailer, crossed the medium and hit a SUV pulling a boat.

It happened to us... We went wheelen all day and then on the way home, when we were slowing down for the stop light in town, the rear drivers side tire fell off and passed us.. When we got home the hubby found the lugs laying in the yard next to where the jeep was parked. Someone was trying to steal the tires off the jeep right in our yard. About a month later someone was trying to take the tires off my dd jeep and found those lug nuts by the garage...

Nobody was hurt, and the guy pulling the boat was happy the wheel didn't bounce up and hit his boat, and only one of his tires was blown out. The tow truck driver that showed up for us was pulling chodes of rim out of the fender liner.

It happend to me about 4 years ago going down I69 at 75mph after the Durand bog. I felt a little vibration in the front and just chalked it off as some mud stuck in the wheel...next thing ya know there it goes. lost all the lug nuts and I did the same thing as another poster and took one off each of my other wheels. Brake rotor had a big flat spot...LOL!

Ok last Oct. we went to the Badlands. After stayin the nite we drove the XJ home. About 5 miles down the highway at 70 75 mph we lost the left front. Didnt have any problem get over to the side. As luck would have it my tire crossed 6 lanes of traffic without hitting anyone. Buddy I was with had a friend right up the road and he was at the bottom of the offramp when we got it there. Ran to parts store got new rotor and we were on your way.
