Default 4.0 to a 3.0 swap

How much work is involved in swapping a 3.0 into a 4.0 ranger

first off, why???????

Anyway, the 3.0, 3.8, and 4.0 are all in the same family so they should have the same trans. BUT the 3.0/3.8 series engines are well know for very defective head gaskets. The 4.0 isn't much better, but at least it has more displacment, and doesn't eat gaskets quite as fast.

If you wanted to swap in a more durable engine, a 2.9 would be a better swap. But I don't know what trans bolt pattern that one has. Even the 2.9 isn't all that great, ford is really lacking in any good small engine to be honest.

Screw it, put a 302 in it, and be done!!!

4.0L = good motor (as long as its ohv and not SOHC)

3.0/3.8L same ball housing

2.9L/4.0L same bellhousing

Dumperdave has a 4x4 ranger with a 3.0L in it that was rolled so the body is trashed....but motor is still good. If attempting to do such a swap then you'll want a donor vehicle for all the misc shit

well, it will bolt up. They did use that engine in that chassis, so it's an easy swap. You will have to do all the standard motor swap stuff. New motor mounts, complete wiring harness, and ecm from the donor truck.

however I would do a oil pressure test, a compression test, and possibly a coolant pressure bleed down test on that engine before putting in. If you want to do it right, do the head gaskets while it's on the ground and easier to work on.

I had good luck with the 3.0, as John said the 4.0 and 3.0 have different bell housings.
I didnt know that they still used a 3.0 in 99.
