Default project pickle cj2a

Here's my project:
1946 cj2a with 55,000 original miles. The drive train is original and it runs. I wheeled while we lived in the Ozarks. Yeah, it was fun. It has the rare 3 speed column shifter so I dont want to do any thing radical to it as far as mods go. This jeep is pretty clean, some rust through the passenger floor, glove box floor, and some fender supports. There are very few modifications, it is converted to 12v. and has "Allstate" after market locking hubs.

My plans:
I want do a resto-mod. restore it close to original condition while making practical modifications. I plan to rebuild the motor and tranny and upgrade the ignition and suspension.

My Purpose for the jeep:
I don't want to make a museum piece.however, I do plan to do some body work and paint. so long as it looks good from 3 feet away.
I plan to take it off road for mild wheeling and for running around up north.
I plan to use for Sunday drives and local car shows.

Heres the story how I got it:
My wife and I tried living down south in the Ozark mountains of Arkansas. We rented a house and barn off a well to do cattle rancher. When he saw my 86 cj7 he had to show me his 86 cj7 so time went on and we became friends. One day we were shootin the crap and he mentioned he had another jeep (he had property and stuff all over the place). I didnt think much of it till he said he may sell it and it was an old army jeep. He then said that it was column shift and flat fendered it was then my heart about beated out of my chest! Turns out it was a civilian jeep with 3 on the tree and a pto on the back! I asked him what he wanted and he said he would give me a good deal. All he wanted was $500.00 and my Glock 40 cal. modal 22 semi auto pistle which I bought for $580.00. DEAL! so took it home for a month or so and beat it up in the hills. Now Im back home in the north and I want to fix it up.

thanks for the pic help. I got to work on it yesterday.

- Pulled the front clip off so we can yank the engine and rebuild it. It runs, but I would like to freshen it up so I know I can depend on it. I hate to be stranded back in deep woods.

- I also plan to rebuild the clutch and maybe go through the trans. I noticed the clutch doesnt disengage once in awhile. If any one has any expertice on this let me know your thoughts.

- The carb. needs to be rebuilt too.
- Noticed some rust through fender supports. Looks like Im buying some new ones.
more work to be done Monday

Do your self a favor and buy the Solex carb, they work great! Make sure points are clean and adjusted right. There is great parts place called Krage Motorsporst (731)926-1004 He and his family grew up around Willys Jeeps

I spent 3 years rebuilding a CJ3a, Nice find for you please keep the pics coming!!
Take alook on Ebay and see what those rear PTO's go for!

I had some clutch problems with a M38A1 I picked up and it turned out a couple of the flywheel bolts had come loose, backing out till they hit the clutch and not letting it disengage right. Locktite is recommended. Nice Jeep too.

Thanks for the advice guys. Im not real educated on ingnition systems but I would like to get rid of points ( they seem to be a pain). May be go electronic. Ill check out those fly wheel bolts to see if that the issue.Im a little undecided as what to do with the carb yet. I plan to pull the motor this week. More pics to come today.

Got some work done today.
- disconnected steering box from frame
- disconnected shifter linkage from tranny
- cut the body mount bolts loose from the frame. That wasnt so bad since about all the bolts were half unthreaded from the nuts any way the sawz-all blade cut easily through the bolts.

Heres a close up

tomorrow the body comes off... If every thing goes as planned.

worked on it today.
As you can see, I pulled the body off. Steering gear was a pain to deal with. I had to unbolt the steering box from the frame and pull the body off steering gear and all.

Body wasnt as heavy as I thought it would be just my dad and I lifted it off.
Frame was exceptionaly clean surface rust only. No scaling and no cracks so far. I was pleasently suprised.

I also drained all the fluids to prep for pulling the engine.
was a lot of water in the tranny and t-case- not sure how it got in there I have no leaks in either one and I cant find vents. I ll have to get a better look tomorrow.

Engine comes out next!

Pulled the motor today. didnt get very far into it. heres what I found so far.
-cylenders in good shape just need to be honed
-needs rings
-clutch is bad
-head needs to be resurfaced
-starter is fried. its 6v. the rest of the system is 12v. gotta get it rebuilt to be 12v. only $300.00!
looks like Im getting off easy with the motor. just gotta freshen it up while I have it pulled.
pics coming soon.

the 6v starter is fine with the 12v you just cannot sit and crank on it.

Got some bad news. pulled the head off my motor the other day and got a real close look and found a bunch of cracks in it in the block. I checked on getting it fixed and it would be a lot money if they could do it and chances are pretty good that it would break again. So Im checking looking at a sbc 350 on monday. Stay tuned...
[IMG][/IMG]
I actually have more cracks than whats pictured.

Would a 4.0 be an easy swap so you could still keep it Jeep powered?

Nice jeep, sure is a shame to have to change the motor. Not that a SBC is a bad thing, just changes the whole direction. =)
