Default column mount ignition switch

I took my ignition swith off my GM style column during mock up and can not tell how it goes back on? I see the metal rod but where does it go on the switch to engage the system, Is it on the side where the littl opening is that slides? if so how does the rod stay in there? and when I turn the key it seems to not want to slide properly?

Any help would be appreciated
