Default is camp grayling concidered state land?

just wondering if anyone knows the laws about the base trails. are they concidered state ran? or military ran? Do DNR patrol and enforce or does MP take care of it?

Is the same rules that go for state orv routes the same for camp grayling property?

I've come around turns or over hills in 1068's and Humvees at speed to find myself faced with ORV's. As loud as they are, they still can't hear the track coming under the helmets and over their own engines. They also tend to pass us from behind, assuming we have rearview mirrors and know they are there. We usually end field exercises and put the tracks away in October, taking them out again in March.

I wouldn't expect to see MP's on the trails unless it was part of their training exercise, like at Annual Training.

The DNR and MP's both take care of it. Its all military or goverment owned property but we trail ride and dirt bike down them all the time during the summer. As long as you dont go where your not supposed to like inside of the bombing ranges your fine.

Use to go there years ago, back then DNR did not patrol it because it falls under the jurisdiction of the MP's. I'm not saying they can't just saying they didn't. You are perfectly welcome there but like PavementPounder said pay attention, because they can't usually hear or see you coming. I've seen tracked transports come over small hills front end air born landing were I was just sitting moments before. They have gates they close when range is active.

Most guys we ran into were great let kids climb on and check out humvees, tanks, etc.. Some are too serious and get all "top secret" on you.

There is a trail marked "Tracked Vehicles Only" we found at the end of our last day on the last trip we didn't have time to explore, can't remember where. Sounds fun, you find it I want the GPS coordinates.

I was out in that area last summer exploring and came up to the gate. They told us we couldn't go through because we didn't have military IDs. I asked the guard what was legal for us to be on and he said to wait a second. He went into the guardhouse and came out with a 1 page paper map that he gave to us and said we were legal to go on any of the trails but to stay off any of the ranges that were in use.

I can't answer your question Nick, but I can tell you that when I was a member of Delta we had our annual labor day run on the base, mostly tank trails, and we never had a problem. However, I have heard of people getting ticketed from DNR for being on those same tank trails. Go figure huh

yeah I should clarify the gates I was referring to were the large yellow (?) pipe gates out on the trails. Actual chain link fenced in type areas are off limits. Been a few years but we always had a blast there. Had K-5 at the time, on my list of places to get back too know that I have my Jeep.

Honestly, I'm not 100% positive about the management of the base lands either. Much like Ironman, I've heard of issues but not had a problem myself. Some darn nice trails too. Sorry not to be more helpful.

Went up there this last summer with some friends. We drove my 6x6 and had a blast. Any place that was off limits was clearly posted.

Have fun.

I'll see if I can find the map they gave. I'll scan and post it.

My scanner is not working so I had to snap a pic of it. Here is the whole map that the MP at the Howe Road gate gave me. He said it was legal to be on the trails (dotted lines) but to stay of the ranges that were in use.

Here is the northern part of the map so you can see it better.

http://s291.photobucket.com/albums/l...=Grayling2.jpg

Here is the southern part of the map. It shows topo lines and the dotted lines are the different trails.

http://s291.photobucket.com/albums/l...=Grayling3.jpg

The MP told me these trails were legal but I don't know if the DNR considers it legal or not.

Contact "upnorth". I don't know if he posts here but I know he's on M-W from time to time. At one time he told me that we could climb anything that wasn't posted because it was a training area. He claimed to have an inside source at the base. Later he came back and said not true & that the DNR has authority there. Not too clear in my mind. I wish somebody could clarify it.

He is married to his "inside source".
