Default GOOD NEWS St. Helen Motorsport Area Rocks

Pat Brower aka Trailfanatic just called me after he got off the phone with our DNR contact in that area. She relayed to him the news I have been waiting to hear since I sat on the advisory committee representing GLFWDA for the Motorsport Area back in 2003.

Preliminary information looks like $20,000 for engineering and $100,000 for phase one has been approved. Unsure on a start date at this time but will be posted when more information comes out.

Thanks for the call Pat!

Not a big fan of rock crawling myself, but congrats to those that are, but would rather see other things done.

I'd be willing to bet we're working toward getting those "other things" accomplished too. (A larger network of routes, better obstacles, more scramble areas, etc?)

GLFWDA understands that there's more to wheeling than just rocks, but a good portion of our members/constituents enjoy them.

GLFWDA is here to improve all aspects of the sport.
It's just that rock courses were one of the most glaring pieces missing in our system.

Not me.
I'm just the messenger on this one.

This is the result of many years of hard work by Ironman and KB8YMF that have been delayed in coming to fruition. Just as the things I'm working on now probably won't come to fruition for several years yet. Land Use is rarely an instant gratification endeavor. There are usually many hours of work into a project (if not years) before announcements are made.

GLFWDA is workin' on that one too.

It's just going to take more work yet.
Hills in Michigan pose serious environmental issues with managers.
We're all sand and it erodes easily, at least in the LP.

No one has the funding to constantly put the eroded material back on the trail. There are a few products available to stabilize them, but the products all change the climbing experience by placing things in the trail bed to hold it in place - and they all have a price, require installation, and eventually wear out and need to be replaced.

There are some other ideas that GLFWDA is working out, other than stabilization, but I'm not in a position to say anything yet. Things are still in the early stages. I wouldn't want to jinx anything before it's out of the box, so to speak.

Thanks a bunch Pat, GL4wda and others way cool. I have been riding bikes and trucks through and around the St. Helen motorsport area for the last 25+ years besides the staging area I have never seen any large scale improvements to anything. Thanks again.

Hopefully when the rocks are in place we can get more folks to the Motorsport area and get creative with our opportunity of cross country travel on our way to the rock course.

For sure, I walked and collected GPS coordinates for the entire Boutell fence row property on the east side last year for future opportunities like that.
