Default 88 yota question

its prolly already in another thread but anyway i have an 88 toyota pickup 4x4it has just over 121k it has the 3.0 v-6 started to get hot the other day wasnt beatin on it just went out in the morning to start it and let warm up think it has a head gasket leak so i put a bottle of bars leak head gasket sealant in it for know and it quit. was wondering if i could swap in a 22r or 22re into it, truck is a five speed would a bellhousing off a four banger bolt to a v6 tranny or should i just tear it down and replace the head gaskets if so how long will it last till the gaskets go out again

I do not believe the bellhousings are interchangeable. The 22re also does not use the same motormounts. It would not make sense, IMO, to go to a 22re. Regarding the gaskets, they have been redesigned, and you should not have further issues. I don't think the 88's were effected by the bad gaskets though, it was later years mostly. What you can do though is swap in a 3.4 V6 from a Tacoma or 4Runner. They will bolt right in and mate up to your tranney. Off Road Solutions, I believe in Colorado, makes a swap kit and wiring harness for the swap. If my 3.0 ever dies, this is the route I will probably take.

The 3.4L swap is the way i'ld go if i had the money. It's a fairly easy swap, supposibly. I read about it in OFF ROAD magizine (I think, I know I saved it) they did it to a 1st gen 4runner. Most of the 3.0L accessories are interchangable and the trans bolts up I belive. To two things you need are the wiring harness which they do sell that will retane all our factory gauges etc. and the 3.4L Engine. Expect to spend about $2000 for a running engine and a harness though. Then you can TRD super charge it and have a relible engine that can take on a 350ci powered truck easy.

I used to have a link to a website with a ton of info on the 3.0 to 3.4 swap but I lost it when my PC took a dump.

This place has everything you need:

http://www.advanceadapters.com/

Go with the Toyo t-case though. It is much better.

If you going to mess with a 4.3L just put a 350 in and you'll be happy you did.

It would be a matter of what you are going to do with the truck. If you are just going to take it to parks or mud where you might want more power, have at it. You will be stressing a drivetrain that was designed for longlasting behind a much weaker engine though. You will have less to worry with a 4.3. I would go with the 3.4 myself.

I put a 4.3 vortec in mine, I wanted to keep the weight down some. I also like the torque those 4.3 vortecs produce. Not to mention the reliability of them. It has seemed to be enough power. I put 4.56 gears in mine though, for that little extra.

You don't have a white 85 4Runner do you?

Im sure you have, I see your from bay city. I used to live on the corner of state and wheeler. The truck is purple and says Chevota in yellow on the tailgate. I dont want to hijack someone elses thread with pics. I did start another thread in the toy tech section, about the current build plans, I will post some pics up in there.

Yup, I have seen it. Was that one of Joe Twarog's? He had quite a few Toys over the years. I can't remember.

Not as far as I know, I bought it in 97 from a hooters chick and have had it ever since. I have done all the work myself. The truck was silver when I got it. I painted it back in 2002. I do some work on it every couple yrs. This time I think its getting a frame and new suspension setup along with lots of Powder Kote.

I do or did know Joe though. He like his lifted vehicles.

Ah. I wasn't living around here at that time. Is it a regular cab? Then it would kinda sound like Kevin Kukla's old one. Hard to say though. I always tried to keep an eye out for them around town when I lived here before too. I think Rick Lapoutre's sister had a silver one too but she didn't work at Hooters.

Anyway, as soon as you said purple I knew I had seen it. One day it was on Center by Pizza Hut becuase I turned down Livingston to see if I could see it again.

I remember heading to St. Ignace Car Show with Joe in that massive black Suburban he had. You should have seen the look on the guy's face that cut him off in a BMW when Joe tailgated him! And I mean NASCAR-style-almost-touch-bumpers tailgating. Hilarious!! Needless to say, the guy used the BMW's speed to get the hell away from us then.

Oops. Didn't mean to hijack the thread! Back to the question now. Go with a 4.3 or 3.4 Toy.
