Default fwd trans swap opinions

how much harder than a typical RWD or 4wd vehicle is this?

my lil sis neon trans went out (58k miles). if i can locate one at a yard, how hard is this swap? i have never really gotten into a fwd motortransaxle whatever it's called. trans shop quoted her 1500 (down in chicago). I am thinking car dollying it up here and seeing if i can swap the trans and sell it (she is going to buy a new used car). car's in great shape, i may even buy it from her for couple bucks and get 30mpg

thanks

if you have accsess to a hoist they are not to bad. You also have to support the engine when you remove the trans. It could be done on the ground but it will suck

How old is the neon? You may be further ahead selling it as-is.

2000 neon.

i have been reading up on how awful the 4spd trans are in these (also read 1 place that there may have been a recall).

would a 3spd trans require computer swaps etc? i don't know if they are pressure driven or driven by a computer. i was just thinkin if i could get a trans for 300 bucks or something at a PNP or other parts yard, i could swap it in, but have no xperience w/ this kinda junk

$1500 to put in a trans isn't bad, when we did the escort we pulled the motor then the trans though the top, my cousin does them by lifting the car with a cherry picker. But like BlooMule says, you might be farther ahead just selling the car as is.

Take the hit on it and sell it as is, I really dont think you could come out ahead on it, unless you want it for your self.

I don't know if that would work, but I've been told that most late model front drivers have the drivetrain engineered as a unit, in otherwords a different trans might not even bolt up, and you will definitely need to change the body control module, which may cause other problems....

Even the Mopars of old had differences between big and small block V8's, even differences between the 318 and 360 small block.

yea, hollander interchange is only 3 spds for 00-01, i guess it's not 4 spd compatable, will ahve to be 3spd, found one for 250 locally on car-part.com. just don't know if this is something that i really want to be doing. ill stick to old vehicles with 4wd and solid axles, so much easier

not sure 100% what they are doing with it yet, still waiting to get it up to GR, and find out if they are keeping it etc.

just seeing how much of a drag it'd be to swap in a trans IF that's how she decides to go w/ it

It kinda sucks. I had a probe, and the trans' went out 3 times. No car hoist, just jackstands and rigged up a stand with a little winch type thing. first time took about 3 days, second time took maybe a day and a half, and the third trans 11hrs. I would say its not worth it, its a pain in the ass.

I did one of these in my driveway from a same year neon - It wasn't half bad. I pulled it out of another car myself and I had at most 5 or 6 hours into the project. I just supported the motor on a jackstand.
