Default I have no idea how to title this.

My daughter has not been herself since just before Christmas. Hannah is ten and anyone that knows her can describe her as a ray of sunshine. Her recent emotional turn and weight loss I had partially written off to the nasty flu she got just before Christmas and a crazy growth spurt combined with what I was figuring to be puberty onset. (joy!) That being said, I was keeping a really close eye on her and she was not getting better. This past weekend, she had no energy, falling asleep practically every time she sat down and when I put her on the scale, she was down 12 lbs. Not good considering she didn't have much fat to spare in the first place. I kept adding up the symptoms, she was drinking a lot of water until she announced even that didn't taste good and she whined about everything, epic meltdowns over the littlest disagreement with her brother.
I had made an appointment with our family doctor this past Monday and he did the standard urine test and after asking her about eating habits and where she hurt he left to check the results. Doc came barreling back in the door a few seconds later saying, we have a very sick little girl on our hands. You're off to the hospital and plan on staying for awhile. Long and short of it, Type 1 diabetes and she'll be insulin dependent for the rest of her life. Normal blood sugar levels are right around 120 and Hannah registered at 587 yesterday.

She's such a trooper. At one point last night, we had 2 IV's and 4 hanging bags of assorted cocktails along with various monitors hooked to her chest and I've not seen one tear. She claims she wimped out a bit on the second IV but I'm not counting that at all since she truly didn't cry. She's doing her own finger pokes now and administering her own shots. We're trying to find the right mix and they don't anticipate our leaving the hospital until Thursday. On the IV we had gotten her down to the low 200's (they didn't want her lower than that the first night) but now she is back up over 500 again. As our current night nurse just commented, this is why they call it medical practice.

We've got an amazing support group and I know this is all going to be ok, I just had to get this all off my chest. I've been sleeping here with her, having her kick my ass at scrabble at odd hours of the night because we can't sleep and watching her count her allowed carbs off the hospital menu. (in fact, she just poked her head around her Harry Potter book and said..momma..want to play scrabble? I think that child enjoys beating me!)

Anyway...this is our life and everyone with kids...go give them a hug.

The first photo is Hannah in the ER and the second was this afternoon just before the last of the IV bags were pulled.

sorry to hear this , but glad to hear she is doing great. Its a good thing you took in as soon as you did! My mom has type 1 so I know how it can be with low/high sugar.

Has the doctor talked about the automatic insulin pumps?

Thank you!

They have but feel at this time she is too young for them. We're currently playing with one that looks like an epi pen. The insulin and needle are in a vial that screws onto the pen. You then dial to 2 and push and release in order to aerate the syringe and then dial to the prescribed dose.

yup, my mom has that. Tons better than messing with all those assorted needles, and having to pull from the bottle.

I don't know anything about this so don't have any real advice or help.

Good luck! Glad to hear she is in good spirits.

Hang tough, girl. We have another friend who's child was diagnosed a couple years ago. Amazing transformation (for the better) in the boy. The new treatment/monitoring equipment is truly awesome.

My thoughts go out to you and your daughter and your family. It sounds as if she has a great attitude about all this and sometimes that can be the most important thing.

my prayers to you and her. Good to hear that you took it serious and took her to the dr. Some people blow this stuff off. You can never be too safe

Good luck

Awesome news this morning, Hannah's numbers dropped to 130. This is the lowest we've seen so far and considering she was back up over 500 last night we're celebrating today.

Thank you for all the comments, Hannah is reading all of them (and Killer B...my favorite is what kind of bowl is that kitty sitting in?? followed by an oooohhh...)

Good luck. I'm glad they caught it before she had more serious symptoms.

Wow! Good looking out on your part! It is going to be tough for her, but I think its a good think she is finding out now and not in her 20s or something - its going to be easier for her to adjust and be compliant. Im sure youve heard this over and over but being compliant is VERY important for quality of life later on. Best wishes! Tell her she is a very tough little girl and I look up to her for being so strong :)

oh, and what beautiful hair!! I love red hair!
