Thumbs up AMC 304 & 360 V8's (rebuilt)

Hey guys,
My buddy who's helping me build the 304 stroker is also going to build up a couple more AMC V8's, which will be up for sale. He does a top-rate job on building the motors, doing waaaayyy more than most shops do, to get a quality build. He has a break-in stand at his shop. His machinist is also a top-notch guy that does excellent work.

My buddy has a 71 or 72 304 V8 that he is going to rebuild. He said that he can build it up for someone for $600 plus the cost of parts and machining.

He's not sure yet on what he will charge for the 360, so I guess prices are pending on that one.

If anyone is interested in either of these motors, PM me your email address and I'll put you in touch with Rick.

To see pics of his work, check out my 304 stroker build thread at : http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=95564

P.S. Rick has built all sorts of AMC V8's, from stockers to race engines. He also built a 4.0L stroker, before they were even popular ... had it in his Commanche and said it had way more torque and towed better than his 318-powered Dakota.

Sincerely,
GregTaylor

Hey everyone,
I was at Rick's place again today, finishing up the 304 stroker he's helping me build (check out the build thread at ... http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=95564 )

Rick has started building a 360 with the Edelbrock cam & Performer intake. He's doing his usually "way beyond the norm" for building the engine, including the valley pan oil line, drilled oil drain back holes in the valley area, zero-clearanced oil pump housing, etc. Here's some pics ... anyone want an AWESOME 360 for their rig?

Default Built 390 for sale also

BUMP for awesome AMC engines.

BTW, Rick also has a killer 390 built that will mate up to any AMC tranny out there, since the crank has the adapter machined into it. Here are the specs ...

Here is the description of the engine that I have for sale. 401 Engine Completely rebuilt with new cast pistons, new rings, bearings etc. ARP rod bolts. Actually, this is a ’69 390 with .060” over bore. Crank is machined to accept any transmission. Balanced engine with 727 flex
plate. Clevite Cam .488 lift 294 duration (218 @ ,050). New valves & springs, New water pump, New Carter Super Pump (looks like stock),
internal oil line, New oil pump zero clearanced 65 psi oil pressure, New Double roller T/chain, New distributor gear, New Torker intake. ’72 dog leg heads w/ 3 angle valve job. 9.5:1 comp ratio. Can hear run on a starting stand. $3500.00 exchange or $4000.00 out the door. DOES NOT come with distributor, carburetor, alternator brkts. Was built for a guy with a CJ to play in the sand with the chevys who didn't come through.

Rick Jones 734-735-6060

I also have another 390 in the machine shop to be machined if you don't care for the above combo. This one will be a +0.040" over bore with cast pistons as well. I can put what ever cam, intake and heads that you want. (with the exception of '70 high compression heads)

Oh, and one other thing ... Rick built a 4.0L stroker before they were even popular ... he might be interested in putting those together as well.

Sincerely,
GregTaylor

I wonder if the AMC guys know about you guys. All I hear on the AMC websites is DIY guys and Ken Parkman (He built the amc mill for that one hotrod magazine engine challenge a couple years back).

Rick Jones has been a looooong time member of both the Glass City AMC Club (Toledo), the Great Lakes Classic AMC Club (Detroit) and NAMDRA (National American Motors Drivers & Racers Assoc). Rick has been building engines for the local club guys for years. Like I mentioned, he built a 4.0L stroker before they were even popular ... that engine is still running around today.

Also, if you're not familiar with the www.amc-list.com , I would suggest joining up. It's the main email forum for AMCers and we discuss the 4.0L into AMCs to a degree there, along with other occasional Jeep topics (like my Grand Wagoneer's 304 stroker).

A couple of other good AMC/Jeep forums are at www.bull-tear.com and www.theamcforum.com

Greg Taylor :)

Greg,
I'm associated on these... I visit sometimes as mentioned, but just as you guys are, I'm concentrating on my Jeep. I'm a member of the amc list, and joined the sites you mentioned.

http://amccars.net/
http://www.amx-perience.com/
Take care,
Matt
p.s. when the Javelin has its time (I'll need to get a place of my own first, so it'll be a while) I'll get in touch with you for the oiling mod and stuff that's beyond my 'do everything myself' ability/knowledge. Saved this thread to 'favorites' under the amc folder.

Default 360 is about to be broke-in

Hey guys,
Got the following email from Rick, his 360 is about done and ready for the starting/break-in stand. Here's your chance to get a quality-built AMC 360 engine.

Greg :)

Hey Greg,

I just went through my costs for the 360. If you would, please go ahead and post it for sale for me. I hope to start it and break it in this week. You know my routine, I run it several times for 15/20 minutes for a total of about 2 hours. Then I change the oil, filter and water and run it for at least another hour total. It leaves here with Rotella and EOS (zinc additive) still in it. The engine is for sale WITHOUT a carburetor, distributor, fuel, pump, pulleys, alternator brackets, and exhaust manifolds.

The engine is a 8.5:1 360 with a +.030" over bore. New pistons, rings, bearings, cam, lifters, T/chain, distributor gear, internal oil line installed, oil pump zero clearanced, new water pump.
Block: Bored, decked, align bored and degreased.
Crank: Turned, polished, and degreased.
Heads: Milled flat, new intake valves, new valve guides, complete valve job, new rocker arm pivots.
Cam: Edelbrock Performer.
Intake: Edelbrock Performer powder coated chrome.
Machining costs = $1145.00
Parts Costs = $1335.00
For Sale Price = $3000.00 Firm.

Default Mode 1 AMC 360 V8 build done ...

Here are pics of Rick's 360 build that is for sale. This is the equivalent to AMC's "mode 1" build in Performance American Style publication.

Here's another update from Rick ...

BTW.. I got it broke in today. I will run it a few more times then, change the fluids.

Wow... with the Carter on there it runs really nice. With a blip of the throttle and it revs right up, right now!

To the best of my recollection I have built (or am building) the 42nd AMC engine. Not bragging or anything, just adding them up. This includes 5 that are at the machine shop right now.

2- six cylinders (one was my 4L Jeep stroker)
3- 343 (one is the stroker 370 in my AMX)
4- 304 (including your 330 stroker)
7- 401 (2 are mine & 1 was yours)
9- 390 (1 is my SC/Rambler engine, 1 is my Machine engine)
17- 360 (1 is for my SC/360, 1 is the 383 stroker project)

9 Jeeps
2 Rebel machines
2 SC/Ramblers
1 Bricklin
2 Hornet/Concord
1 SC/360
Lots-o-AMX & Javelins
1 Penski Matador replica

Track record.... 2 rebuilt twice (not counted twice) due to the Zincless oil. 1 rebuilt twice due to allowing one bolt to be torqued by the customer (cam bolt walked out and wore a hole in the T-cover.)
Man, if I rebuilt my stash of cores I could easily top the 50 mark this year!

Are you wanting him to take it down and have the assembly balanced (checked and fixed if needed?) and then reassemble? Let me know. Thanks!
